Kamala Harris to Highlight Teacher Pay Proposal In Return Trip To South Carolina on April 19-21, 2019 *Updated

Senator Kamala Harris will return to South Carolina on April 19, 20, and 21. Harris will hold two town halls at Winthrop University in Rock Hill and South Carolina State University in Orangeburg. Harris will highlight her recent proposal to increase average teacher pay in South Carolina by 19 percent, as well as her broader policy agenda for the Palmetto State. Additionally, Harris will headline an event with the Orangeburg County Democratic Party and meet with faith and community leaders in Holly Hill. Harris will also attend Easter Sunday church service at Bible Way Church in Columbia.

This is Harris’s fourth visit to South Carolina as a presidential candidate. She previously held town halls and meet and greets in several locations across the state including Charleston, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Hemingway, and St. George. She also visited several women-owned businesses, stopped by Rodney Scott’s BBQ for lunch, and attended the Pink Ice Gala with her fellow AKAs in Columbia.

Kamala Harris Receives Five Endorsements From South Carolina Leaders Who Will Serve as Campaign Co-Chairs

Today, Senator Kamala Harris received the endorsements of Representative Pat Henegan, Senator Darrell Jackson, Representative JA Moore, Berkeley County Democratic Party Chair Melissa Watson, and former candidate for Governor and Florence attorney Marguerite Willis. All five of leaders will serve as co-chairs for Senator Kamala Harris’ South Carolina campaign.

“I’m honored these leaders have joined our campaign in the Palmetto State to build an economy that works for everyone, including raising the salaries of South Carolina teachers,” said Kamala Harris. “I am committed to organizing and campaigning in every corner of the state and I’m proud our co-chairs reflect the diversity of South Carolina Democrats.”

Representative Pat Henegan, a retired educator who represents District 54 in the Pee Dee and a fellow soror in Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., said, “As a former educator I’m proud to stand by Kamala Harris who has proposed the greatest federal investment in teacher pay in our nation’s history. I’m excited to work to make her the next President of the United States.”

“In South Carolina, educational inequality is the foundation of economic inequality,” said Senator Darrell Jackson, “I'm endorsing Kamala Harris because she has proposed a groundbreaking plan that would finally treat teachers with the respect they deserve. Her plan specifically addresses the needs of teachers working in economically disenfranchised schools where kids need increased support and attention. I'm proud to stand by her as we fight to make sure every child receives an education that can set them on the path to achieving the American dream." Jackson is the Senior Pastor of Bible Way Church of Atlas Road, one of the largest African American churches in South Carolina in addition to representing District 21 in the Midlands.

Representative JA Moore, a progressive leader representing District 15 in South Carolina’s Lowcountry who lost his sister to gun violence in the 2015 Mother Emanuel AME Church Shooting, said “Kamala Harris is a visionary leader with the history and expertise to address issues of gun violence, racially motivated hatred, and the unique challenges minorities and women face here in South Carolina and across our country. She has consistently shown through her campaign a commitment to progressive policies. She supports closing loopholes for gun purchases, fighting for the rights and pay of teachers, and reforming our broken criminal justice system. I know Senator Harris is the best person to represent Americans who truly believe in 'liberty and justice for all.' "

“Kamala Harris’ plan to treat teachers like the professionals they are is key to my endorsement of her candidacy,” said Melissa Watson, chair of the Berkeley County Democratic Party and public school teacher. “She has placed working people at the center of her campaign and I’m confident that she will do just that as President.”

“I’m excited to endorse Kamala Harris for President,” said Marguerite Willis, a Florence attorney who has been an outspoken leader on equal pay for women, President of the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association, and a 2018 candidate for Governor as part of the historic wave of women running for office. “She is the candidate willing to speak truth to power and stand up for South Carolinians, particularly our teachers and our elderly, who desperately need her help on the federal level.”

Elizabeth Warren Announces South Carolina Staff Hires

Columbia, SC - Today, the Warren for President Campaign announced key hires for her South Carolina state staff. The new team members include a State Director, Organizing Director and Communications Director with significant campaign experience in South Carolina and throughout the Southeast. The announcement marks the first phase of a larger effort by Warren and her team to build a robust South Carolina infrastructure ahead of the early state primary next February.

State Director: Alycia Albergottie
Alycia Albergottie is a native of Columbia, SC and grew up at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. She is a proud graduate of the Allen University and a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Albergottie is a veteran campaign staffer and the Warren for President campaign marks her third national campaign position within South Carolina. Her campaign experience includes national, statewide, regional and city-wide races. She worked on the 2012 Obama campaign and was the State Director for the 2016 Hillary Campaign in South Carolina. Albergottie is the former Richland County Democratic Party (RCDP) Chair and served as a 2016 SC Delegate to the Democratic National Convention (DNC).

State Organizing Director: Ebenezer Abolarin
Ebenezer Abolarin is a native of Mableton, Georgia. He is a proud graduate of the University of West Georgia with a degree in Political Science. Abolarin is a southern states field expert with experience working in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Most recently, Abolarin served as the Statewide Field Director for the Walt Maddox Gubernatorial campaign in Alabama in 2018. Also in Alabama, he worked as a Regional Field Director for Doug Jones’s successful 2017 U.S. Senate campaign, and as Randall Woodfin’s GOTV Director implementing a program that led to his landslide victory in the Birmingham Mayoral Race over a favored incumbent. In addition to his campaign work, Abolarin held positions in the Georgia House Democratic Caucus, worked with the 2016 coordinated campaign lead by house minority leader Stacey Abrams, and as Chief of Staff for Georgia State Representative David Wilkerson.

State Communications Director: Sam Coleman
Sam Coleman is a native of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is a proud graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University. He has more than five years of experience working in communications for campaigns and elected officials. Before joining Warren for President, Mr. Coleman held positions on campaigns in Florida, Philadelphia, Alabama, New Mexico and Mississippi. Additionally, he served as Press Secretary for Senator Doug Jones of Alabama, and as Assistant Communications Director for Governor Terry McAuliffe in Virginia.

Bernie Sanders to Visit South Carolina on Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15, 2019 *Updated

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Bernie Sanders will return to South Carolina today for the first time since launching his presidential campaign. He will host a rally in North Charleston followed by a roundtable Friday with medical professionals and South Carolinians impacted by the rising cost of health care.

Sanders last visited the state in January to honor the life, legacy and unfinished work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He spoke at the annual King Day at the Dome rally, an event hosted by the NAACP South Carolina State Conference, and attended other community gatherings around the state.
