The two-day trip includes five public campaign stops across four counties. On Tuesday, July 16, Senator Kamala Harris will campaign in Davenport on the heels of her 4th of July swing through Iowa last week. Harris will join State Representative Phyllis Thede, LULAC Council 10 President Jazmin E. Newton-Butt, Davenport NAACP Vice President Vera Kelly and others for a roundtable discussion about the issues facing women of color.

Harris will then join AARP members and the Des Moines Register for a forum focused on older Americans and her solutions to problems that uniquely impact their lives. Harris will discuss her record of fighting for older Americans and plans to reduce the cost of prescription drugs and protect critical programs like Social Security and Medicare. This event is open to AARP members only.

This past weekend, Harris announced an agenda to lift up minority communities. Harris’ agenda includes plans to invest $100 billion in minority homeownership to address the racial wealth gap, offer relief for renters paying more than 30% of their income on rent; provide up to $500 a month for working families making less than $100,000 through a new middle class tax credit; combat the Black maternal mortality crisis; close the gender pay gap for women, which is 61 cents on the dollar for Black women in Iowa and 57 cents for Latinas in Iowa; take executive actions to reduce the carnage of gun violence in communities across America; and, make new investments to raise teacher pay and expand opportunities for teachers of color.

Northwest Iowa Trip Includes Town Hall in Iowa’s Reddest Counties

DES MOINES, IA — Following the O’Rourke family’s first trip to the Hawkeye State to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend, Beto will return to Iowa for a two-day swing—including hosting a town hall with Iowans from four of the most Republican counties in the state. The trip will also include the AARP and Des Moines Register Forum, a “Beers with Beto” Meet and Greet and a Latino Meet and Greet.

This trip underscores Beto’s commitment to a new kind of politics in bringing everyone into our political process, and writing no one off. He will hold a town hall in Sioux County, which voted overwhelmingly for President Trump, and welcome Iowans from the other “SOLO Counties” — Sioux, Osceola, Lyon, and O’Brien Counties in northwest Iowa.

The “SOLO” Counties” are the four reddest counties in Iowa. However, in 2018 IA-04 Democratic Congressional candidate J.D. Scholten, who campaigned in ultra-red counties trying to unseat Rep. Steve King, significantly improved on the margins by not writing them off.

Since launching his bid for the White House, O’Rourke has held 93 Iowa events and town halls in 43 counties to meet with, listen to, and learn from Iowans in every corner of the state. This has included immigration and climate change roundtables, tours of the flood damage in Pacific Junction and Davenport, a visit to the Iowa Veterans Home, among many other events. O’Rourke has visited more Iowa counties than any other presidential candidate this year.

SAN ANTONIO, TX (July 8, 2019) – On Monday, July 8, the presidential campaign of former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary under President Obama and San Antonio Mayor, Julián Castro, announced seven new endorsements from local Iowa leaders during Secretary Castro’s seventh trip to the first-in-the-nation caucus state.
 
In a letter released Monday, the leaders wrote, “Secretary Castro has proven time and again that he will be a president for all Americans — including those whose voices are not being heard in Washington today. Our job this year couldn’t be more critical —- we must choose a candidate who not only has a vision for the future but also the ability to beat Donald Trump. Julián Castro has shown he can do both. And there is simply too much at stake for our country right now to choose anything less. For us, there is only one candidate, and we hope you’ll join us and support Julián Castro.”

The endorsements were announced during Secretary Castro's seventh trip to Iowa, where he hosted meet-and-greets in Council Bluffs and Montgomery County, before traveling to Tabor and Bartlett to tour damage from recent flooding along the Missouri River. Secretary Castro’s trip to Iowa follows his stand out performance at the first Democratic debates, which the New York Times described as "Castro's big night."  Following the debates, ABC and the Washington Post published a poll in which Secretary Castro moved into the top five polling candidates nationally at four percent.

Why Julián Castro is our candidate
 
As Iowans, we understand the responsibility that comes with being the first in the nation to vote. We want to not only hear where the candidates stand on the issues, but to truly understand how their vision for our country will impact our neighbors and our community. We want to be confident that our nominee has the strength, empathy, passion and experience to deal with the challenges ahead.
 
Secretary Julián Castro’s vision to make this country the smartest, healthiest, most prosperous, and fairest for all Americans is the real deal. Growing up in San Antonio, he was raised by a single mother and attended public schools. After graduating from Stanford University and Harvard Law School, Julián embarked on public service and became the youngest city council member in his hometown, and then was elected Mayor. Kamala Harris Secures Second Democratic Chair Endorsement in Iowa

Today, chair of the Northwest Des Moines Democrats Vanessa Phelan announced her endorsement of Senator Kamala Harris. This is the second endorsement from a Democratic chair in as many days. Phelan’s endorsement comes after she met and spoke with Harris at her Des Moines Town Hall on Wednesday evening.

“As a mother, I need a candidate who will fight for the future. As an activist, I need a candidate who inspires more people to fight today. I need a fearless boundary-breaker, a daughter of immigrants, an accomplished professional who bends the system until it works for the people,” said Phelan.

“I need a candidate who leads with the truth, who uproots injustice, who wakes up at 3 am thinking about our most vulnerable. The candidate I need is Senator Kamala Harris,” she concluded.

Yesterday, West Des Moines chair Victor Dutchuk endorsed Harris after hosting her at the annual West Des Moines Democrat picnic. Today’s endorsement comes at the conclusion of Harris’ three-day swing across Iowa, where she has had the opportunity to hear directly from Iowans about the issues that keep them up at night. SAN ANTONIO, TX (July 3, 2019) – This Sunday, July 7, and Monday July 8, presidential candidate and former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary under President Obama and San Antonio Mayor, Julián Castro, will travel to Iowa for his seventh trip to the first-in-the-nation caucus state since announcing his candidacy. Before traveling to Iowa, Secretary Castro will travel to Omaha, Nebraska for a meet-and-greet with local residents.

Secretary Castro’s trip to Iowa follows his stand out performance at the first Democratic debates, which the New York Times described as "Castro's big night." In a focus group hosted by NBC, five out of six college students who watched both debates said that Secretary Castro won both debates.

On Wednesday, ABC and the Washington Post published a new poll in which Secretary Castro moved into the top five polling candidates nationally at four percent. The ABC/Washington Post poll meets the Democratic National Committee’s criteria for consideration under its debate qualification rules. Secretary Castro had the four biggest grassroots fundraising days of his campaign, and has received more than $1 million in contributions.

On Sunday, Secretary Castro will host a meet-and-greet in Omaha, Nebraska, as well as a meet-and-greet in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
