WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:
Michigan Leaders Applaud Joe Biden’s Selection of Kamala Harris as Running Mate
Today, Joe Biden announced Kamala Harris as his running mate. Leaders from across Michigan applauded the selection:
“I am very excited for my friend, Kamala Harris,” said Senator Debbie Stabenow. “Working side by side with her in the Senate, I see her competence, compassion and ability to get things done. She will hit the ground running on the campaign and is ready to lead on day one. Just like Joe Biden, she gets Michigan and will be there every day for our families.”
“Today is a historic day for this country as we nominate the first Black woman to join the Democratic ticket as the running mate for Vice President of the United States,” said Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence. “This month we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote and this appreciation for Black women leadership is truly powerful. This nomination will inspire the next generation of young Black girls to know that ambition and hard work can take you to the White House and beyond.”
“In Senator Harris, Joe Biden has picked a running mate that he knows will be a strong teammate in healing this nation’s heart and soul,” said Congresswoman Debbie Dingell. “We began the Presidential election cycle with a record 6 women running as potential candidates, and now we have another momentous nomination. This is the team that will win America in November, in the most important election of our lives. Kamala Harris' experience in the US Senate makes her incredibly qualified and the perfect counterpart for this Democratic ticket. We cannot take anything about this race for granted, and I look forward to turning out the 12th district and all of Michigan for Vice President Biden and Senator Harris in November, to protect our country and democracy."
“I’m excited, Senator Kamala Harris brings people together and that's what our country needs right now,” said Michigan State Senator Marshall Bullock. “Together, she and VP Joe Biden will unite our country and restore the soul of this nation. She has always been an advocate for working people whether it’s protecting Obamacare, helping win marriage equality for all, or defending California’s landmark climate change law. And I have no doubt that US Senator Harris is going to resonate with people in Michigan and the Country to bring victory for Democrats come November. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are ready to lead on day one.”
“Kamala Harris has been a champion for working people in the U.S. Senate, she'll be a great addition to the Democratic ticket, and will make a wonderful Vice President,” said Michigan AFL-CIO President Ron Beiber. “She'll help lead our country out of the crises we are currently facing, and she'll be the first woman to ever hold one of the two highest executive offices in our country. It's about time. I can't wait to join record numbers of working people all over Michigan in enthusiastically voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this fall..”
“I am so thrilled to have Senator Kamala Harris joining the ticket with Vice President Biden,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes. “Senator Harris has been a fearless leader who has always stood on the side of working families in our country. Her record of public service shows she has what it takes to stand shoulder to shoulder with Vice President Biden on the campaign trail and in the Oval Office as they work together to build our country back from Donald Trump’s failed leadership. I look forward to continuing to partner with the Biden campaign to defeat Trump and make history on November 3rd as we elect the first Black woman as vice president of our country.”
“I’m thrilled that Vice President Biden selected Kamala Harris as his running mate today,” said Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter. “She is a proven leader who will electrify Democrats and reach so many Americans who are ready to join us restoring dignity and competency to the White House. I believe she will be a great partner for Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket and am proud to support her today.”
I am overjoyed that Senator Kamala Harris was selected as Biden’s choice for VP,” said Lathrup Village Mayor Kelly Garrett. “She has been a strong advocate for people of color regarding the disproportionate impact of COVID on communities of color. Senator Harris introduced legislation to address these disparities. Senator Harris’ legislation would develop policy and funding prescriptions to combat issues facing minority and underserved communities. That is the type of Vice President that we the people need, especially people of color.”
"I am excited by the selection of Senator Kamala Harris as Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential choice,” said Wayne County Commission Chair Alisha Bell. “She’s ready on day one with the experience and track record on fighting for issues important to all Americans. As a fellow HBCU graduate and member of the Divine 9, I know the commitment she has for serving the community as well as ensuring equality for all. Senator Harris doesn’t hesitate to take on powerful people and establishments which is the kind of leader VP Joe Biden needs by his side to restore the soul of our Nation.”
“Kamala Harris’s tenure as a fighter and advocate for Americans makes me certain that a Biden-Harris ticket will build the excitement and enthusiasm to take back the White House and flip our state blue," said Michigan State Representative Sarah Anthony. "With her leadership, I'm excited and proud to help mobilize Michiganders in this historic moment and transformational election.”
“Kamala Harris has fought big oil, fought the gun lobby, and fought for the people of California, said Michigan State Representative Kevin Hertel. "Now it's time for her to fight for the soul of the nation alongside Joe Biden. And I'm excited to fight with them here in Michigan as we make sure the Great Lakes State is blue this time around.”
