Major Outlets Name Julián Castro Winner of Democratic Debate
Washington Post, CNN name Castro winner with second ‘strong’ debate performance
SAN ANTONIO, TX (August 1, 2019) – Two major news outlets named former Obama Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Mayor of San Antonio, Texas, Julián Castro, a winner of the Democratic presidential debate in Detroit on Wednesday with his “standout” and “strong” performance, pointing out “two times is a trend.” Both The Washington Post and CNN, the host of the two nights of Democratic debates, said Castro “stood out” among the 10 candidates on stage.
Castro demonstrated his ability to go toe-to-toe with Donald Trump, bettering other candidates with the “line of the night” in an exchange on immigration, where he was “forceful and effective,” and “really stuck it to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on how to handle the officer who choked Eric Garner.”
The Washington Post: Winners and losers from Night 2 of the second Democratic debate
“Castro might have been the standout. He ranked second after the first debate when it came to who pleasantly surprised people the most, but he didn’t get really any polling bump out of it. He was strong again on Wednesday night — when he got the chance. At one point, he got in one of the most crowd-pleasing digs at Biden: ‘Mr. Vice President, it looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past, and one of us hasn’t,’ he said while talking about immigration. ‘. . . What we need are politicians who actually have some guts on this issue.’”
CNN: Winners and losers from the second night of the CNN debate
“Two times is a trend. And it's been two straight debates where the former San Antonio mayor has stood out -- in a good way. He probably had the line of the night, hitting back on Biden with this hammer: "It looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past and one of us hasn't." Castro was forceful and effective on immigration and really stuck it to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on how to handle the officer who choked Eric Garner. ... If Castro can make these next two debates, he could really make noise in the race.”
