nslee will unveil plan to address the needs of students, educators and working families through new protections, programs, and investments
Seattle, WA – On Monday, Governor Jay Inslee will return to Iowa to introduce his “Putting Families First” plan to strengthen families at every stage of life, including early childhood education, free and reduced tuition college, expanded workforce protections, and healthcare reform, among other progressive policies that address income inequality. Inslee will announce the details of the plan after hearing from workers and families about the economic challenges they face.
Tomorrow, July 15 at 9:00 AM CT, Inslee will travel to Iowa City, Iowa to meet with union college and university faculty who are members of SEIU’s Faculty Forward program. Inslee will discuss the parts of his plan relating to higher education, including protections for faculty and free and reduced tuition college for those in need. Inslee recently passed free and reduced tuition for public colleges in Washington state, a law that has been called a “game changer” for its scope and innovation.
Next, at 12:00 PM CT, Inslee will travel to Des Moines to meet with families who have struggled due to Iowa’s lack of supportive services and programs for working parents. Inslee will introduce national policy proposals including child care, early childhood education and paid family and medical leave, building on his success in Washington state. Inslee will hear directly from parents about how these reforms would impact them and their children.
Iowa does not have a paid family leave law, and under Governor Inslee’s proposal, Iowa’s entire 1.6 million person workforce would be eligible for paid leave, including 873,000 Iowans who cannot currently afford to take unpaid leave under the current Family And Medical Leave Act. Inslee’s plan would additionally give more than 63,000 Iowa families access to free childcare. Inslee’s proposal would allow more than 250,000 students to be eligible for free tuition at public universities and community colleges, including 43,000 Iowans currently enrolled.
