Jay Inslee to Bring ‘Climate Mission Tour’ to Michigan; Discuss Environmental Justice and Clean Water for All Plan
Inslee will meet with environmental justice leaders, tour polluted areas of the city, and discuss the critical need for clean and affordable water for all
Seattle – Tomorrow, Washington Governor Jay Inslee will travel to Michigan on his ‘Climate Mission Tour.” Inslee will hold three events in Detroit as he meets with environmental justice leaders, tours polluted areas of the city, and discusses the need for clean and affordable water for all.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 4th, at 11:00 AM ET, Inslee will visit Detroit, touring the most polluted zipcode in Michigan—48217—with local environmental justice leaders. On the tour he will hear about the legacy of environmental injustices that face the residents of 48217. The neighborhood sits at the base of the Marathon Refinery, which refines Canadian tar sands oil. Asthma hospitalization rates in southwest Detroit and surrounding areas are nearly triple the state average, cancer rates are also higher than average, a result of high rates of pollution and particulate matter. In addition to air pollution, residents of southwest Detroit face many issues relating to water quality and affordability.
At 12:15 PM ET, Inslee will meet with national and local environmental justice leaders as part of a roundtable hosted by We The People Detroit. Discussion will focus on the intersectionality of environmental justice issues in Detroit and how a clean energy future must involve the country’s marginalized communities.
Finally, at 1:45 PM ET, Inslee will learn about the local community’s lack of access to clean and affordable drinking water through a tour of the north end of Detroit. Inslee will discuss his Clean Water For All proposal to ensure clean and affordable water access, while listening to community and environmental justice leaders on the effects of PFAS contamination in water supplies and food insecurity. The tour will highlight urban gardens, solar street lights, and other projects that demonstrate how local communities can fight climate change.
Inslee, who is the only presidential candidate who has made defeating climate change and building a clean energy economy the cornerstone of his campaign, has been making stops to speak with voters across the country as part of his “Climate Mission Tour.” He recently announced his “100% Clean Energy for America” and "Evergreen Economy" plans, and since launching his campaign in March, has visited Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, Texas, California, New York, Illinois, and Oregon.
