Beto O'Rourke Returns to Houston for Two Events on Saturday, June 29, 2019 *Updated
AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Beto O’Rourke will return to Houston on Saturday to lead a protest at a Southwest Key Detention Center and meet with Texans that evening for a “Bands With Beto” event. This will be Beto’s fourth visit to Houston since announcing his campaign for President.
The day will begin with Beto joining local activists, immigrants' rights groups, and community leaders who are coming together in opposition to a detention center where children are being held after coming to this country seeking refuge. The gathering follows his trip to another child detention center in Homestead, Florida on Thursday morning. Addressing those who joined him in protest at Homestead, O’Rourke called for the facility to be closed while adding that his immigration plan ends family separation, reunites those who have already been separated, prohibits private and for-profit prisons and immigration facilities, stops the detention of those who pose no harm to our communities, and comprehensively rewrites America’s immigration and asylum laws. “This is inhumane, it should be un-American, but as long as it is happening in this country, it is American. And it’s on us to change it,” said O’Rourke during his visit.
Beto has been a reliable leader in challenging the Trump Administration’s cruel and inhumane immigration policies. Last year, Beto organized and led a 2,000 person Father’s Day march to a child tent camp that had been erected in Tornillo to raise awareness of family separation. In hopes of raising more awareness, he later brought a bipartisan congressional delegation to tour the facility. Beto continued to return to the camp until all of the children were successfully released and the facility was shut down.
Later on Saturday, Beto will host a “Bands with Beto” grassroots event at The West End in Houston where there will be a special guest appearance by Paul Wall. Prior to Saturday’s visit, O’Rourke will be in Austin tonight for a 6:00 public meet and greet at Scholz Garten.
