WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:
Joe Biden’s Campaign Kickoff Rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
This afternoon, Joe and Jill Biden held the official Biden for President campaign kickoff rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – the birthplace of our democracy. With a call to unify the country and overcome the divisions stoked by Donald Trump, Joe Biden addressed a crowd of 6,000 about the need for “dramatic change for our children’s sake” and underlined that it's time to "remember who we are" as Americans and to "stop fighting and start fixing."
Philadelphia Inquirer: “Joe Biden in Philly: ‘Let’s stop fighting and start fixing’”
“Joe Biden directly challenged President Donald Trump as America’s ‘divider-in-chief’ and offered himself as an antidote who can work across political divides in a speech Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia…’If the American people want a president to add to our division, to lead with a clenched fist, closed hand and a hard heart, to demonize the opponents and spew hatred – they don’t need me. They’ve got President Donald Trump,’ Biden said, standing on a platform in sun-bathed Eakins Oval.”
Pennsylvania Capital-Star: “Joe Biden rallies in Philadelphia, drawing sharp contrasts with Trump in a key 2020 state”
“Dismissing President Donald Trump as the ‘divider in chief,’ and vowing that ‘no one will work harder to earn your support,’ Joe Biden rallied supporters under a bright May sun here Saturday…In perhaps the most effective and pointed portion of his remarks, Biden sought to turn Donald Trump’s perceived strength on the economy against him. ‘President Trump inherited an economy that was given to him by the Obama-Biden administration. He inherited it, just like he inherited everything else in his life. And just like everything else in his life, he’s in the process of squandering that as well.’”
NBC News: “Joe Biden at rally casts himself as candidate who could unify the nation"
“Joe Biden framed the 2020 presidential election as a choice between unity over division and cast himself as the candidate uniquely positioned to close the nation’s political divide, promising Saturday ‘a different path.’”
New York Times: “Biden Delivers Call for National Unity at Philadelphia Rally”
“Joseph R. Biden Jr., affectionately known to many Democrats in this city as Pennsylvania’s ‘third senator,’ returned to the state of his birth on Saturday to deliver a forceful call for national unity, looking past the Democratic presidential primary to directly appeal to the voters who helped power President Trump’s victory in this state and across the country in 2016.”
Bloomberg: “Biden Tells Voters He'd `Stop Fighting and Start Fixing' Country”
“Joe Biden told voters that he would lead the country 'to stop fighting and start fixing' if elected president, striking a contrast with the current occupant of the White House and with many of the other Democrats hoping to win their party’s nomination.”
Wall Street Journal: "Biden Goes on the Offensive Against Trump"
"Democratic candidate Joe Biden said President Trump inherited a strong U.S. economy and 10 years of growth from former President Obama, just as he inherited much of his wealth from his father. 'It was given to him, just like he’s inherited everything else in his life,' said Mr. Biden. 'And just like everything else he’s been given in his life, he’s in the process of squandering that as well.”'"
CNN: “Biden calls for unity, but insists he can 'go toe-to-toe with the GOP,' in first large rally”
“Joe Biden used the first major rally of his 2020 presidential campaign to issue a call for unity -- while also arguing he understands better than any other Democratic candidate the entrenched Republican opposition the party's nominee will face.”
Politico: “Biden flips between ‘unity’ and anti-Trump message at Philly kickoff”
“As he capped a three-week campaign launch tour with a rally Saturday in Philadelphia, Biden said he chose to be here for a reason. ‘Why do we begin this journey in this place, Philadelphia?’ Biden asked a crowd of thousands of supporters here. ‘This was the birthplace of our democracy.’...The former vice president is quickly making inroads here. He not only is headquartered in Philadelphia, but made his first official campaign appearance at a union hall in Pittsburgh and hosted a big-donor fundraiser in Philadelphia.”
The Hill: “Biden calls for unity, jabs at Trump in campaign launch”
“Biden engaged in a call-and response with the crowd, hitting the president over his response to the 2017 Charlottesville protests, immigration policy and affinity for foreign strongmen. ‘Let me ask you, are we a nation that believes there’s a moral equivalence between white supremacists, neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and those with the courage to stand against them? No we don’t, but Trump does. Are we a nation that believes in ripping children from the arms of their parents at the border? No, we don’t, but Trump does. Are we a nation that embraces dictators and tyrants like Putin and Kim Jong Un? We don’t but Trump does,’ he said, with the audience shouting ‘No!’ after each question.”
Mother Jones: “Biden Keeps Focus on Trump in Official Campaign Kickoff”
“Former Vice President Joe Biden officially kicked off his 2020 campaign with a rally in Philadelphia on Saturday that focused on the need to unite the country and defeat President Donald Trump…In an obvious rebuke to Trump, Biden made a point of praising Obama’s character. ‘I think we should step back and say something we don’t often say enough as a party, or as a nation, Barack Obama was an extraordinary man,’ Biden said. ‘He was a president our children could and did look up to.’”
