Inslee to Tour Impact of Davenport Flooding
Inslee to Meet with Iowa Residents Affected by Flood; Flood Frequency is Increasing Due to Climate Change
Seattle – As climate change-intensified flooding continues to impact the midwest, Washington Governor Jay Inslee will visit Iowa on Wednesday to witness flood damage in Davenport, Iowa.
Tomorrow, May 15th, Inslee will travel to Davenport, Iowa, where he will meet elected leaders, visit with affected community members, and tour flood-damaged areas.
He will begin the tour at 9:30 AM CT with a briefing on the flooding and its resulting damage by State Representative Monica Kurth and State Senator Rob Hogg. Together, they will discuss the resources and support local communities need to get back on their feet.
Inslee will continue the tour on foot, listening to the experiences of affected residents, meeting with small business owners and Davenport community members. Inslee will visit Dress for Success Quad Cities, a local nonprofit, and speak with boardmember Marie Gleason at 10:00 AM CT.
At 10:20 AM CT, Inslee will stop by The Half Nelson, where he will speak to its owner Matt Osborn about trying to open the new restaurant in the midst of the flood.
Then, at 10:40 AM CT, Inslee will travel to the Front Street Brewery, a local business in operation since 1992. Owner Tim Baldwin will provide context for the historical significance of recent flooding.
Inslee will share his mission to defeat climate change while highlighting the human and financial cost of inaction on climate change to communities like Davenport.
“Iowa families are paying the price for America’s inaction on climate change,” Gov. Inslee said. “I look forward to hearing from Davenport residents about how the flooding has impacted their community. We must take action now to fund disaster recovery and to protect communities like Davenport from the impacts of climate change.”
The trip marks Inslee’s second tour of climate change intensified flooding in Iowa, after previously traveling to Hamburg in April, where he witnessed flood damage and met with climate victims.
Inslee, who is the only presidential candidate who has made defeating climate change and building a clean energy economy the cornerstone of his campaign, has been making stops to speak with voters across the country as part of his “Climate Mission Tour.” Since launching his campaign in March, he has visited Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, Texas, California, New York, and Oregon.
