Bernie Sanders to Return to Brooklyn and Chicago to Hold First Events of Historic Presidential Campaign
Bernie 2020 to kick off from the sites that launched Sanders' political and civil rights activism
WASHINGTON -- Sen. Bernie Sanders next weekend will hold the first events of his presidential campaign at Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York, and Navy Pier in Chicago. He will speak about the need to defeat Donald Trump, the most dangerous president in modern American history, and what he has learned from his long history of fighting for economic, social, racial and environmental justice. He will also visit Selma, Alabama, to participate in the annual events which remember 1965's "Bloody Sunday" and the attacks on civil rights activists.
Sanders is the son of a Jewish immigrant from Poland and grew up in a small, rent controlled apartment in Flatbush. He is a public school graduate of James Madison High School and attended Brooklyn College before graduating from the University of Chicago. During his time as a student in Chicago, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Bernie helped lead student protests against segregated campus housing, segregated schools and police brutality.
Sanders is launching his historic grassroots campaign in order to create a government and economy that works for all, not just the one percent. His campaign will take on the powerful special interests that dominate our economic and political life, and unite Americans as part of a historic grassroots effort to win the Democratic nomination and defeat Donald Trump’s efforts to divide the country.
Over the next several weeks, Sanders will travel to Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, and California. He will then return to Burlington, Vermont, for the official launch of his campaign.
