BURLINGTON, Vt. -- U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday will continue his swing through California. The Democratic Party presidential candidate will host rallies in Anaheim, Riverside, San Bernardino, Cathedral City and Ventura. Sanders will discuss a wide range of issues, including getting big money out of politics, his plan to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, combating climate change and ensuring universal health care.

Democratic National Convention Committee Announces Platform Drafting Committee Members

PHILADELPHIA – Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz announced the appointment of the 15-person Platform Drafting Committee. The Drafting Committee is responsible for developing and managing the process through which the Democratic Party’s National Platform is established.

According to DNC rules, the members of the drafting committee are appointed at the discretion of the DNC Chair.  This year, in an effort to make this the most representative and inclusive process in history, the DNC Chair elected to allocate 75% of the committee’s seats to the presidential campaigns, awarding the slots proportionally according to the current vote tally.

Chairwoman Wasserman-Schultz also named Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) as Chair of the drafting committee.

"We are delighted to bring together this talented group of Democrats. These individuals represent some of the best progressive thinking from across the nation. I am confident that the members of this committee will engage Americans in a substantive dialogue of ideas and solutions that will inform our Party Platform."

Hon. Howard Berman, Paul Booth, Hon. Carol Browner, Rep. Keith Ellison, Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, Rep. Barbara Lee, Bill McKibben, Deborah Parker, State Rep. Alicia Reece, Bonnie Schaefer, Ambassador Wendy Sherman, Neera Tanden, Dr. Cornel West, and James Zogby.

The Clinton Campaign’s Senior Policy Advisor Maya Harris and the Sanders Campaign’s Policy Director Warren Gunnels will represent their respective campaigns as official, non-voting members of the Committee.

Andrew Grossman was named Platform Executive Director. Grossman is the former Director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.  In 2012, he served as the Director of the Democratic National Convention Platform Committee.

DFL Chairman Ken Martin champion for presidential primary bill, looks forward to more Minnesotans taking part in election process
 
Thanks to a bipartisan effort, the Legislature has passed a bill to move Minnesota to a presidential primary beginning in 2020. Minnesota DFL Chairman Ken Martin has been a champion for is pleased that more Minnesotans will have the opportunity to take part in the election process.
 
“This year, more than 200,000 Minnesotans came out and voted in our Presidential Preference Poll but the long lines, short voting window and shortages of ballots and registration sheets made for a very confusing and dispiriting experience,” Martin said. “We were told thousands more Minnesotans were so frustrated that they left without participating in the process.  
 
“It became clear that the Presidential nominating process in Minnesota needed to be reformed.”
 
Martin said many others wanted to take part in the Presidential Preference Poll but could not attend their precinct caucuses because of work schedules, family commitments or illness. Martin said this no way to make people feel welcome to the election process or to guarantee their right to participate and make their voices heard.
 
Early in the 2016 Legislative Session, Martin reached out to legislative leaders in both parties to indicate his support for a Presidential Primary system which ensures that those who want to vote in Minnesota’s Presidential nominating contest can do so in a more convenient manner throughout the day and via absentee ballot if they so choose. As of today, a bill is making its way to Gov. Mark Dayton for his signature to do just that.
 
“I appreciate legislators were willing to work together to pass a bill to ensure the broadest participation possible without disenfranchising people,” Martin said. “The Presidential Primary will make the process inviting, accessible, fair, and open to all eligible voters in Minnesota.”

Bernie Sanders Launches Microsite on Historic Fundraising

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign on Friday launched a microsite to mark the senator’s historic fundraising effort, which includes raising money from more than 7.6 million contributions with more than 2.4 million individual donors.

Sanders’ campaign on Friday also filed a report with the Federal Election Commission showing it raised more than $212 million since the start of the campaign. Sanders raised more than $26.9 million in April, out-raising Secretary Clinton for the fourth month in a row.

The average contribution to the senator’s campaign is around $27. Only 5 percent of Sanders' total came from donors who have given the maximum $2,700 an individual may donate to a candidate. Almost half of Hillary Clinton’s primary campaign committee money comes from maxed-out donors.
