IDP Statement on the Second Presidential Debate
DES MOINES--Iowa Democratic Party Chair, Dr. Andy McGuire issued the following statement on Hillary Clinton’s performance during tonight’s second presidential debate:
"Hillary Clinton delivered another stellar performance in tonight’s debate and emerged as the clear winner. Donald Trump had an opportunity to apologize to many people tonight. He had an opportunity to apologize for insulting the mother of a fallen U.S. soldier. Trump had an opportunity to apologize for perpetuating a racist lie about the birthplace of President Obama. Instead, we watched a desperate candidate lash out in an attempt to salvage a campaign that is losing supporters every day. He expressed no meaningful regret and doubled down on his defense that his recent comments about women were ‘locker room’ talk. The fact is that Trump’s comments and behavior toward women are indefensible. His comments do not belong in a locker room. They do not belong anywhere.
“Much like the first presidential debate, Hillary Clinton was the only candidate talking about the issues. From the beginning, her campaign has been about children, working families and the issues that affect their everyday lives. Trump had an opportunity to talk about these same issues. Instead, he resorted to political stunts and distractions and failed to answer the tough questions. His behavior was childlike as he appeared to be on the brink of a temper tantrum throughout the debate.
“In light of Trump’s recently revealed comments from 2005, dozens of GOP lawmakers including 2008 Republican Presidential nominee John McCain have withdrawn their support from Donald Trump. I am very disappointed that none of Iowa’s U.S. Senators or U.S. Congressmen are on that list. I urge all Iowa Republicans to rescind their support immediately.”
