FORMER VIRGINIA GOVERNOR AND VETERAN JIM GILMORE TO SPEND VETERAN’S DAY IN SOUTH CAROLINA (on Nov. 11th)
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC, NOV. 10, 2015 -- Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, Republican candidate for president, will campaign through parts of South Carolina on Veteran’s Day. Gilmore, who is one of only two Republican candidates who served in the military, will speak with Exchange Club members in Mount Pleasant and honor and visit with veterans on Daniel Island during his visit.
Jim Gilmore served as the 68th governor of Virginia from 1998 to 2002. He gained national prominence during his campaign and governorship by advocating conservative policies that directly addressed the daily concerns of working men and women in every Virginia community. Gilmore’s legacy of nearly two decades of public service is highlighted by significant policy work on the major issues of taxation, homeland security and by a determined focus to bring people together from different beliefs and backgrounds.
Gilmore enlisted as a volunteer in the U.S. Army after college and worked as a counter-intelligence agent in then-West Germany in the early 1970’s following intensive language training in German, in which he became fluent. He was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for Service to NATO.
“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Jim Gilmore to South Carolina,” said Kristin Power, state campaign coordinator for the Gilmore for President Committee. “All of his supporters are proud of his military record, and I’m appreciative that he chose to share Veteran’s Day with other veterans in South Carolina.”
