Alexandria, VA -- Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, the real outsider in the race for the Republican campaign nomination, said today he has signed the U.S. Term Limits Pledge promising to work for a Constitutional amendment to limit the terms of Congressmen and Senators.
"The idea of limiting the terms of members of Congress is something many voters have been demanding for years," Gilmore said. "But now, probably more than any time in our history, the actions -- and the inactions -- of our elected officials in Washington are making it very plain why there is a need for this amendment."
Gilmore signed the pledge of U.S. Term Limits, an organization that is currently campaigning for a Convention of States to pass a congressional term limits amendment. "This pledge clearly resonates with the people," Gilmore said. Some recent polls have shown as many as 75 percent of voters nationwide support term limits.
The President has no official role in the Constitutional amendments process, but can use his office as a bully pulpit to push for approval of an amendment. Gilmore, on signing the pledge, promised to do just that.
