Statement by Hillary Clinton on Endorsement by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers
Hillary Clinton released the following statement after the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, a diverse industrial trade union with nearly 600,000 members, endorsed her candidacy for President of the United States.
“As a longtime supporter of organized labor and a proud honorary member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, I am honored to receive IAM’s endorsement for President.
“Unions like IAM have long been the soul and the spine of the American economy, fighting for good jobs and worker’s rights from coast to coast. After years of declining employment and deep losses during the recession, businesses are recognizing that creating good, manufacturing jobs here in the United States gives them access to a resource unparalleled anywhere else in the world—a well-educated, highly-trained, productive workforce.
“But we must do more to get more American factories humming again—and create more good-paying union jobs for American workers. That's why I've said that the defining economic challenge of our time is getting incomes rising steadily and strongly for everyday Americans. As President, I will fight for everyone who shares that goal. I plan to expand the New Markets Tax Credit to help drive private investment to manufacturing communities, and crack down on the tax loopholes that allow corporations to shift jobs, earnings, and investment overseas. I will stand against Republican budget cuts, and plans to privatize or slash Social Security and retirement benefits. I will work with unions, including IAM, to significantly increase investment in apprenticeship programs, which provide a pathway to middle-class jobs through paid training. And I will fight hard every day to ensure that all workers have the fundamental right to organize, to join a union, and to retire with dignity and security after decades of hard work.
“Over the course of decades, strong unions like IAM helped build the mighty American middle class. I’m proud that IAM will stand with me in fighting for a brighter future for our families, our economy, and our country.”
