Obama’s Campaign For Change Rounds Out Senior Staff For Minnesota Campaign

OBAMA’S CAMPAIGN FOR CHANGE ROUNDS OUT SENIOR STAFF FOR MINNESOTA CAMPAIGN

ST. PAUL – Today, Barack Obama’s Campaign for Change in Minnesota announced its field, political, surrogate and new media directors, rounding its senior staff for the general election campaign. Jaci Urness will serve as field director, Dominick Washington will serve as political director, C. Scott Cooper will serve as surrogate director and Xavier Lopez-Ayala will be the new media director. The Obama campaign previously announced that Jeff Blodgett is taking the helm as state director and Nick Kimball will serve as communications director for the Minnesota campaign. Five of the six senior staff members make their homes in Minnesota.

Jaci Urness has been with the Obama for 19 months, having worked across the country. She started out in Des Moines, IA, and continued on to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Wyoming, Washington, Nevada, and Virginia during the primary season. Urness worked for the Minnesota Coordinated Campaign in 2006 and also worked as a legislative aide to former Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Dean E. Johnson. She graduated from the University of Iowa and grew up on a farm outside Fischer, MN.

Dominick Washington has served as communications manager for Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and was deputy press secretary for former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle from 2000 to 2002. Washington was a delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention and has advised political campaigns in Minnesota. Prior to joining the Obama campaign, he was communications director at UnitedHealth Group where he was responsible for developing and executing external communications strategies. Washington is a South Dakota native and is a graduate of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.

C. Scott Cooper is a longtime activist in Minnesota's progressive political community. He recently served for six years as the executive director of the Minnesota Alliance for Progressive Action, following several years as the public policy director for OutFront Minnesota. Prior to that, Cooper served as a member of former Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone's U.S. Senate staff during Wellstone's first term. Cooper has played key roles in several Minnesota elections, including Wellstone's campaigns, Skip Humphrey's gubernatorial campaign, and serving as campaign manager for former Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton's successful 1997 reelection bid. Cooper is a graduate of Macalester College and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

Xavier Lopez-Ayala came to the Obama campaign from the Hillary for President campaign. He worked for the Clinton campaign in Iowa, Michigan, California, Ohio and Indiana. Lopez-Ayala has previous experience working for a social networking website, as the student coordinator for the Mexican-American Political Association and as a community outreach fellow with Polaris Project's Los Angeles office. Lopez-Ayala attends Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI, where he majors in Political Science.

“We are honored to have these professionals join our team as we head into the home stretch of the campaign,” Obama for America Minnesota state director Jeff Blodgett said. “Minnesota voters are hungry for something different. Barack Obama has detailed proposals that will strengthen the economy, create good jobs and turn things around in our country. We’re looking forward to building a strong grassroots organization, made up of thousands of Minnesota volunteers, to talk with voters about Senator Obama’s ideas and to compete for every single vote across the state.”

The Race for the 2008 Republican Nomination: A Book of Editorial Cartoons (Paperback) By Eric Appleman

Now you can take the website "Democracy In Action" with you. This book brings the fine work done by Eric Appleman chronicling the 2008 campaign to the written page. The cartoons capture the spirit of this exciting race for the White House.

Book Description
A good editorial cartoon can capture the essence of an event or a candidacy like few other media. This collection of over 250 editorial cartoons by more than 75 artists provides insights on the candidates for the 2008 Republican nomination and the process that led up to the Convention in Minnesota.

After seven years of President George W. Bush's leadership, Republicans faced a difficult electoral environment signaled by setbacks in the 2006 mid-term elections. Top contenders included maverick and media favorite Sen. John McCain, folksy former Gov. Mike Huckabee, rich and handsome former Gov. Mitt Romney, America's Mayor Rudy Giuliani, late entrant former Sen. Fred Thompson, and the libertarian leaning Rep. Ron Paul.  McCain, an early frontrunner, saw his campaign implode at the beginning of July 2007 and yet managed to emerge as the presumptive Republican nominee eight months later despite grumblings from some conservatives.

In this collection, many of America's top editorial cartoonists offer their views on the GOP candidates, McCain's classic comeback, and the happenings on the road to St. Paul.

A good editorial cartoon can capture the essence of an event or a candidacy like few other media. This collection of over 250 editorial cartoons by more than 75 artists provides insights on the candidates for the 2008 Democratic nomination and the process that led up to the Convention in Denver.

The 2008 Democratic presidential primary race was one of the most intense nominating campaigns in a generation. A record 35 million people voted in the Democratic primaries. The Democratic candidates raised over half a billion dollars, also a record.

Starting with the Iowa caucuses on January 3, 2008, early contests winnowed the field; veteran Sens. Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, Gov. Bill Richardson, and Rep. Dennis Kucinich all ended their campaigns in January.  Former Sen. John Edwards tried to hang on, but ended his quest at the end of month, leaving Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama engaged in a titanic struggle.  Democratic voters faced a historic choice between the determined Clinton, who saw her mantle of inevitability slip away, and the youthful Obama, who combined an inspirational message and unprecedented campaign organization.  For a time it appeared that superdelegates might decide the nomination or that the race might go all the way to the convention.

In this collection, many of America's top editorial cartoonists offer their views on the historic Democratic nominating campaign that went all the way to the last primaries on June 3.

What They're Saying About the Republican National Convention (Our 3,000th Post)

What They’re Saying About the Republican National Convention

Convention Preparations on Target

"Indeed, both parties were interested in St. Paul's bid but Republicans moved more quickly and grabbed it first. And their convention planning so far [has] been a model of efficiency and organization while Democrats in Denver have wrestled with logistical complications and fundraising woes."
(Associated Press, Republicans hoping for a grand old party in Minn., July 21, 2008)
Republicans kick into high gear and begin the build-out of the Xcel Energy Center:

"When Neil Diamond leaves the Xcel Energy Center after this weekend's two-night gig, the Xcel Energy Center will shut down for six weeks while it undergoes a Republican Party makeover, turning it into a launching pad for John McCain's 2008 presidential bid."
(Pioneer Press, 'X' about to begin its political makeover, July 20, 2008)

"Republican National Convention planners took their tangible steps forward Monday, beginning a six-week conversion from hockey arena and concert hall to political showplace for the Sept. 1-4 nominating convention."
(Associated Press, Republicans start arena conversion for convention, July 21, 2008)

"This is not the first GOP convention to be held in Minnesota - Minneapolis hosted the Republican convention back in 1892, but this time around the scale is mind boggling."
(KARE, July 21, 2008)

"They'll spend the next six weeks running miles of wires through the building, and building hospitality and media suites. When all is built, John McCain will accept the Republican Party's nomination a few feet from where the Minnesota Wild and their opponents usually sit during hockey games."
(Minnesota Public Radio, RNC construction begins inside Xcel Energy Center, July 21, 2008)

The 2008 Republican National Convention hires convention veterans who apply lessons learned from past conventions and therefore, significantly contribute to highly successful conventions:

"General contractor Freeman Co. has handled a succession of GOP conventions. Its work includes the extra-quick conversion of the Houston Astrodome in 1992 (which included raising five miles of light trusses to the Astrodome roof) and the creation of a false floor (with offices underneath) in Madison Square Garden for the 2004 convention in New York City."
(Pioneer Press, 'X' about to begin its political makeover, July 20, 2008)

"They are old pros. It's the sixth Republican convention for Greg Lane, the general contractor who works for Freeman, which is coordinating the convention makeover, and the 10th convention for Mike Miller, director of operations for the arrangement committee. Their roles are said to underscore the philosophy of Maria Cino, the convention's CEO, to rely on convention veterans to make things work."
(Star Tribune, RNC gets the keys; time for an X-treme makeover, July 21, 2008)

The Republican National Convention will have an estimated $160 million economic impact on Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The build-out for the convention is also benefitting many local workers in the Twin Cities:

Reporter: "What I'm hearing from these carpenters inside the Xcel Energy Center is that they are eager to work hard and get this place ready for the Republican National Convention."
(KSTP, July 21, 2008)

Interviewed Worker: "I haven't been working for a while. This is going to put food on the table. I'm a single parent, and a full-time dad."
(KSTP, July 21, 2008)

Minnesotans Launch Veterans for Obama

Minnesotans Launch Veterans for Obama

ST. PAUL – A group of Minnesota veterans today officially launched Minnesota Veterans for Obama, a group charged with organizing Minnesota veterans and military families for Obama and turning them out to vote on Nov. 4. P02 Jim Bootz, Sgt. Chuck Sporer and U.S. Army veteran Cheryl Poling discussed Obama’s record of keeping faith with our service men and women and their families, and Sen. John McCain’s consistent failure to show veterans his support when it was needed most in the U.S. Senate.

Jim Bootz

“We honor Senator McCain’s service to our country and he is a true American patriot, but the fact is when we’ve needed him most in the Senate, he hasn’t been there for us," Bootz, a Vietnam-era veteran of the U.S. Navy said. “Barack Obama has a consistent record of coming through for veterans and he is committed to creating a 21st Century Department of Veterans' Affairs that provides the care and benefits our nation's veterans deserve.

“Barack Obama will ensure our safety and security by listening to the commanders on the ground to responsibly end the Iraq war. He’ll refocus our strategic national security efforts by taking the fight to the people who attacked us on September 11 – Osama bin Laden, al Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Jim Bootz, Veterans For Obama

“Make no mistake, with Barack Obama as Commander in Chief we will aggressively fight the war on terror – and we will win.”

Minnesota Veterans Unite Behind John McCain

MINNESOTA VETERANS UNITE BEHIND JOHN MCCAIN

ST. PAUL, MN -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced the leadership of Minnesota Veterans for McCain, a statewide grassroots organization that will work to bolster John McCain's support within Minnesota's veterans' community. The press conference occurred in conjunction with the announcement of the Statewide Veterans for McCain Steering Committee and Veterans for McCain rallies across the country.

Leo Thorsness

"We're here today on behalf of many Minnesotans who are currently serving in uniform and therefore cannot be here today," said Minnesota Veterans for McCain Chair, Brigadier General Dennis Schulstad, USAF (Ret.). "As retired members of the military we know the dedication it takes to put the uniform on and we wholeheartedly believe that Senator John McCain is the right person to be our next commander-in-chief."

Schulstad joined with an estimated 35 Minnesota veterans of every military conflict since World War II to praise Senator McCain's experience, leadership and record of strong support for veterans and their families.

"Being a Blue Star mother and wife, I know how important it is to have strong leadership in the White House," said Colleen Dettmer, a Forest Lake resident whose husband and two sons have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. "John McCain understands the nature of this war and will do everything in his power to finish the job and bring our soldiers home when the mission is completed. I believe Senator McCain also realizes the tremendous sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, as well as the sacrifices of their families."

Leo Thorsness

Retired Air Force Colonel Leo K. Thorsness, a Minnesota native from Walnut Grove, former POW and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, joined Minnesota veterans in voicing his support for his fellow POW in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton."

"John is a man of character and integrity," said Col. Leo K. Thorsness. "I saw him put to the test as a fellow POW in Hanoi and he showed courage, integrity and faith in the worst possible situation. His service to our country and ability to work with Republicans and Democrats give him the real ability to become a true statesman as President."

John McCain 2008 Launches New TV Ad: "Pump"

JOHN MCCAIN 2008 LAUNCHES NEW TV AD: "PUMP"

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today released a new television ad entitled "Pump." The ad highlights Barack Obama's opposition to initiatives that will help to lower gas prices and achieve energy independence. Barack Obama opposes more drilling in America, expanding nuclear energy use and incentives to spark electric-car research. Unlike Barack Obama, John McCain has proposed a comprehensive, balanced plan to achieve energy independence -- the Lexington Project -- that supports more drilling, expands the use of nuclear energy, encouraging more research while investing in alternative energy sources. The ad will air on national cable and in key states.

Script For "Pump" (TV :30)

ANNCR: Gas prices - $4, $5, no end in sight, because some in Washington are still saying no to drilling in America.

No to independence from foreign oil.

Who can you thank for rising prices at the pump?

CHANT: Obama, Obama

ANNCR: One man knows we must now drill more in America and rescue our family budgets.

Don't hope for more energy, vote for it. McCain.

JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

Transformation Begins at Xcel Energy Center For The 2008 Republican National Convention

Transformation Begins at Xcel Energy Center For The 2008 Republican National Convention

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today marks the handover of the Xcel Energy Center to planners for the 2008 Republican National Convention, beginning a six-week transformation in advance of the September 1-4 event.

Xcel Energy Center

During the next 42 days, convention staff will oversee the build-out of the Xcel Energy Center and the 475,000 square feet of media workspace located in the Saint Paul RiverCentre and Roy Wilkins Auditorium. Experts specializing in a variety of trades will work as a team to ensure that all systems are "go" when the gavel drops September 1.

"After more than one year of preparation and a lot of hard work, we are excited to officially transition from planning to implementation," said convention President and CEO Maria Cino. "With only six weeks to go, we will be ready to welcome Sen. John McCain and the 45,000 convention participants joining us from around the country and the millions more participating from home."

Xcel Energy Center

Twenty-five trucks carrying equipment and supplies arrived at the Xcel Energy Center early this morning, enabling crews to get an early start on the first phase of the transformation process. Today, modifications to suites and media workspace will begin, ensuring that all necessary accommodations are made for the 15,000 members of the media expected at this year’s convention.

Throughout the next six weeks, crews will install nearly six miles of phone and internet cable and a total of 4,500 data and analog lines. Cellular providers will be increasing service capacity and state-of-the-art technology will be installed to provide real-time access to convention activities for millions around the world.

Mike Dukakis 1988 Convention Speech Anniversary

Michael S. Dukakis accepting the Democratic Nomination for the Presidency of the United States in Atlanta, Georgia on July 21, 1988.

"My fellow Democrats. My fellow Americans.

Sixteen months ago, when I announced my candidacy for the Presidency of the United States, I said this campaign would be a marathon. Tonight, with the wind at our backs; with friends by our side; with courage in our hearts; the race to the finish line begins.

And we're going to win this race.

We're going to win because we are the party that believes in the American dream.

A dream so powerful that no distance of ground, no expanse of ocean, no barrier of language, no distinction of race or creed or color can weaken its hold on the human heart.

And I know, because my friends, I'm a product of that dream and I'm proud of it"

A dream that brought my father to this country 76 years ago; that brought my mother and her family here one year later--poor, unable to speak English; but with a burning desire to succeed in their new land of opportunity.

And tonight, in the presence of that marvelous woman who is my mother and who, came here 75 years ago; with the memory in my heart of the young man, who arrived at Ellis Island with only $25 in his pocket, but with a deep and abiding faith in the promise of America--and how I wish he was here tonight; he'd be very proud of his son, and he'd be very proud of his adopted country, I can assure you--tonight, as a son of immigrants with a wonderful wife and now with Lisa our lovely daughter-in-law, four terrific children; and as a proud public servant who has cherished every minute of the last sixteen months on the campaign trail, I accept your nomination for the Presidency of the United States.

And we're going to build the kind of America that Lloyd Bentsen has been fighting for 40 years; the kind of America where hard work is rewarded; where American goods and American workmanship are the best in the world, the kind of America that provides American workers and their families with at least 60 days' notice when a factory or a plant shuts down.

To build the future so that when our children and grandchildren look back in their time on what we did in our time; they will say that we had the wisdom to carry on the dreams of those who came before us; the courage to make our own dreams come true; the foresight to blaze a trail for generations yet to come.

And as I accept your nomination tonight, I can't help recalling that the first marathon was run in ancient Greece, and that on important occasions like this one, the people of Athens would complete their ceremonies by taking a pledge.

That pledge--that covenant--is as eloquent and timely today as it was 2000 years ago.

"We will never bring disgrace to this, our country, by any act of dishonesty or of cowardice. We will fight for the ideals of this, our country. We will revere and obey the law. We will strive to quicken our sense of civic duty. Thus, in all these ways, we will transmit this country greater, stronger, prouder and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us."

That is my pledge to you, my fellow Democrats.

And that is my pledge to you, my fellow Americans.

Thank you all, very, very much."
