Former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore To Explore 2008 Bid

Former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore to explore presidential bid

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia - In preparation to seek the 2008 Republican nomination for president, former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore announced today that he will form a presidential exploratory committee on January 2, 2007.  Gilmore, a Republican, served as governor of Virginia from 1998 to 2002.

"I believe the current field of potential candidates lacks a mainstream conservative that is capable of mounting an effective national campaign," Gilmore said.  "It is my intention to fill that void.  For the Republican party to be successful we need electable candidates who can articulate a positive, mainstream conservative message that can reach all Americans."

As governor, Jim Gilmore governed as a conservative.  He reduced income taxes for military families living in Virginia, cut the car tax by 70 percent for all Virginia families, and he reduced the tax on prescription drugs for senior citizens.  Gilmore also worked to reduce rising college tuition for Virginia families.  Under his watch, the Republican Party of Virginia captured majorities in the House of Delegates and the State Senate for the first time since Reconstruction.

Jim Gilmore was the governor of Virginia when the Pentagon was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001.

Steve Schmidt Joins Supporters of Senator McCain

Steve Schmidt Joins Supporters of Senator McCain in 2008

ALEXANDRIA, VA – U.S. Senator John McCain’s presidential exploratory committee announced today that Steve Schmidt has joined the Senator's team.

Schmidt, who most recently worked as the campaign manager for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's successful re-election bid, will serve as a senior adviser to Senator McCain, should he decide to run for president in 2008.

"Senator McCain is a common sense conservative with a unique brand of leadership that will unite Americans of many different stripes,” said Schmidt. “It will be a great honor to work on behalf of Senator McCain.”

In 2004 Schmidt helped to direct the daily message and response operation for the President’s re-election campaign and was also a member of the campaign’s senior strategic planning group.

“Steve Schmidt’s professionalism, strategic vision and political acumen have brought success to nearly every organization he’s been a part of," said Senator McCain. "I am excited to have him as part of our team."

Brownback Expands Exploratory Committee in Iowa and Kansas

BROWNBACK EXPANDS EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE
Kevin McLaughlin of Iowa and Dave Mugler of Kansas Sign On

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today announced that Kevin McLaughlin of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dr. Dave Mugler of Manhattan, Kansas, have joined his presidential exploratory committee.

"Kevin and Dr. Mugler bring experience and ideas to the table," said Brownback. "Kevin's leadership on tax reform in Iowa speaks to a broader need for federal tax reform, and Dr. Mugler's extensive knowledge of agricultural issues will be crucial as we face changes and opportunities in agriculture and energy."

Kevin McLaughlin was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and has worked in the financial services and investment industry for 30 years. In 1996, he served as the Polk County Chair for Steve Forbes' presidential bid, and in 2000 as the Iowa Vice Chair for Forbes.

"Senator Brownback understands the critical need for tax, Social Security, and health care reform," said McLaughlin. "Anti-growth taxes and the massive cost increases predicted for entitlement programs represent the greatest threat to the well being of young generations of Americans and our future economic health."

"Senator Brownback grew up on a farm and understands firsthand the issues that farmers are facing," said Mugler. "As new opportunities in energy and agriculture bring on the largest changes to farming in a generation, Senator Brownback has the background to embrace the future while respecting the past."

These new commercials focus on fair trade and national security.

"I’m Congressman Duncan Hunter. Americans start a football game with a clean scoreboard, but China starts a game against our businesses with a 74 point advantage.
The give a 17% subsidy to their guys, they penalize our guys 17%, and they devalue their currency by 40%. That’s cheating and China is buying ships and planes and missiles with America trade dollars. Join me at Peace through Strength for fair trade."
