Excerpts: Remarks by U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman

Excerpts: Remarks by U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman
Senator Focuses on John McCain’s Commitment to Country and Bipartisanship

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - This evening U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) will address the 2008 Republican National Convention. Sen. Lieberman will expand on the convention’s overall theme, "Country First," and the theme for today’s program, which is "service," as he discusses John McCain’s commitment to working across party lines and ability to break the partisan divide in Washington.

Joe Lieberman

Excerpts from Senator Lieberman’s remarks are below.

On why he supports John McCain to be our next president:

"And that brings me directly to why I am here tonight. What, after all, is a Democrat like me doing at a Republican convention like this? The answer is simple. I’m here to support John McCain because country matters more than party. I'm here tonight because John McCain is the best choice to bring our country together and lead our country forward. I’m here because John McCain’s whole life testifies to a great truth: being a Democrat or a Republican is important. But it is not more important than being an American."

On John McCain’s dedication to putting country before politics or self-interest:

"John understands that it shouldn’t take a natural disaster like Hurricane Gustav to get us to take off our partisan blinders and work together to get things done. It shouldn’t take a natural disaster to teach us that the American people don’t care much if you have an "R" or a "D" after your name. What they care about is: are we solving the problems they are up against every day?

"What you can expect from John McCain as President is precisely what he has done this week: which is to put country first. That is the code by which he has lived his entire life, and that is the code he will carry with him into the White House. I have personally seen John over and over again bring people together from both parties to tackle our toughest problems we face."

On John McCain’s commitment to victory in Iraq:

"Especially at a time of war, we need a president we can count on to fight for what’s right for our country - not only when it is easy, but when it is hard. When others were silent, John McCain had the judgment to sound the alarm about the mistakes we were making in Iraq. When others wanted to retreat in defeat from the field of battle, when Barack Obama was voting to cut off funding for our troops on the ground, John McCain had the courage to stand against the tide of public opinion and support the surge and because of that, today, our troops are at last beginning to come home, not in failure, but in honor!"

George W. Bush 2004 Convention Speech Anniversary

In his Acceptance Speech on Thursday, September 02, 2004 , President Bush Shared His Plan for a Safer World & More Hopeful America at the Republican National Convention in New York, New York.

"Mr. Chairman, delegates, fellow citizens: I am honored by your support, and I accept your nomination for President of the United States.

Since 2001, Americans have been given hills to climb, and found the strength to climb them. Now, because we have made the hard journey, we can see the valley below. Now, because we have faced challenges with resolve, we have historic goals within our reach, and greatness in our future. We will build a safer world and a more hopeful America -- and nothing will hold us back.

In the work we have done, and the work we will do, I am fortunate to have a superb Vice President. I have counted on Dick Cheney's calm and steady judgment in difficult days, and I am honored to have him at my side.

I am grateful to share my walk in life with Laura Bush. Americans have come to see the goodness and kindness and strength I first saw 26 years ago, and we love our First Lady.

I am a fortunate father of two spirited, intelligent, and lovely young women. I am blessed with a sister and brothers who are also my closest friends. And I will always be the proud and grateful son of George and Barbara Bush.

My father served eight years at the side of another great American -- Ronald Reagan. His spirit of optimism and goodwill and decency are in this hall, and in our hearts, and will always define our party.

Two months from today, voters will make a choice based on the records we have built, the convictions we hold, and the vision that guides us forward. A presidential election is a contest for the future. Tonight I will tell you where I stand, what I believe, and where I will lead this country in the next four years.

To everything we know there is a season -- a time for sadness, a time for struggle, a time for rebuilding. And now we have reached a time for hope. This young century will be liberty's century. By promoting liberty abroad, we will build a safer world. By encouraging liberty at home, we will build a more hopeful America. Like generations before us, we have a calling from beyond the stars to stand for freedom. This is the everlasting dream of America -- and tonight, in this place, that dream is renewed. Now we go forward -- grateful for our freedom, faithful to our cause, and confident in the future of the greatest nation on earth.

God bless you, and may God continue to bless America."

Governors of Four States Affected by Hurricane Gustav Deliver Video Messages to Opening Session of the 2008 Republican National Convention

Governors of Four States Affected by Hurricane Gustav Deliver Video Messages to Opening Session of the 2008 Republican National Convention

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today, the governors of four of the states affected by Hurricane Gustav addressed the opening session of the 2008 Republican National Convention. Their remarks were delivered via a taped message to convention attendees. Below are excerpts from the video:

Texas Governor Rick Perry
"We may have a big flood event here in northeast Texas on Wednesday or Thursday of this next week, but we’re prepared for that. ... You’re seeing Republican governors ... doing a fabulous job of taking care of the citizens. That’s what we do."

Alabama Governor Bob Riley

On meeting the challenges of natural disasters:

"I’ve seen neighborhoods come together to help each other in ways that bind communities for life. I’ve seen remarkable acts of compassion and charity. And through these storms, the collective greatness of our people shines through. Now, another hurricane has impacted our coast. This storm may challenge our states but it will not shake our will."

On the efforts of the National Guard:

"As they always do in times of trouble, at home or abroad, our Guard soldiers are displaying the values that shaped our nation - character, courage, and sacrifice. ... To our Guard troops, you are making this country proud. You embody honor, duty, and dedication. ... It is those values, that strength, that will lay the foundation for our recovery."

Florida Governor Charlie Crist

On experiences during Tropical Storm Fay

"As I traveled our state in the days following Fay’s landfall, I was reminded again of the resilience and strength of our people. The kindness they extend to one another. Neighbor helping neighbor. Asking not what party you are, but instead how you can help. That's just what we can bring, in many ways, in times of great need."

On Gulf Coast Unity in Face of Storms:

"On behalf of our nearly twenty million Floridians, our dedicated first responders, and the great men and women of the Florida National Guard, we stand ready to once again help one another to assist our neighbors across the Gulf Coast. That is what we do as Americans, what we do as Floridians."

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour
"I want you to know that we’ve been aware of - we’ve felt your prayers. We need those prayers and appreciate them too. ... And we want to say thanks to everybody around the country who’s helping us."

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION PASSES 2008 GOP PLATFORM

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION PASSES 2008 GOP PLATFORM

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The 2008 Republican National Convention unanimously passed the 2008 Republican Party Platform today, featuring the most aggressive and innovative energy policy in Republican Party history.
“We are proud to have passed a platform today that all Republicans will enthusiastically support,” said RNC Chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan.  “This is a document that demonstrates a forward-looking, positive vision for America and is deeply rooted in the long-standing principles that make our Party great.”

The 112-member 2008 Convention Committee on Resolutions (“Platform Committee”) led by Chairman U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) and Co-Chairman U.S. Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) unanimously passed the 2008 Republican Party Platform out of Committee on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008.

“This platform is the product of the most open and transparent process in American political history,” McCarthy said.  “Indeed, we are a Party — as we are a nation — of mavericks.  Yet we stand united today because we are the one Party that speaks to all Americans.”

“Our Party embodies a uniquely American spirit, and this platform is a testament to that freedom and stands as our promise to future generations that we will do whatever it takes to preserve it,” Burr said.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Today, First Lady Laura Bush and Mrs. Cindy McCain addressed the opening session of the 2008 Republican National Convention. The First Lady and Mrs. McCain’s remarks focused on the ongoing relief efforts aimed at assisting the people of the Gulf Coast States. Other speakers included Republican National Committee Chairman Robert M. "Mike" Duncan, U.S. Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), and U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Below are excerpts from today’s remarks:

First Lady Laura Bush
On putting the well-being of our fellow citizens first:
"Our first priority for today and in the coming days is to ensure the safety and well-being of those living in the Gulf Coast Region. And to all of those living in the Gulf States, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
"The effect of Hurricane Gustav is just now being measured. When such events occur, we are reminded that first, we are all Americans - and that our shared American ideals will always transcend political parties and partisanship."

Mrs. Cindy McCain
A call to help the people of the Gulf States:
"I would ask that each one of us commit to join together to aid those in need as quickly as possible. As John has been saying for the last several days, this is a time when we take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats."
Republican National Committee Chairman Robert M. "Mike" Duncan

Laura Bush and Cindy McCain

On the response to Hurricane Gustav:
"We are Republicans. But more importantly, we are proud Americans. And as one nation under God, we come together with prayerful hearts for our country. As we gather in Minnesota, a great storm afflicts our country. And, when one of us is threatened, we are all threatened. As Americans we rise to the challenge. We unite, we respond. We take care of our own."
About the Program

Yesterday, 2008 Republican National Convention officials announced a scaled-back schedule for the convention’s opening day as events shifted toward assisting delegates from and residents in Gulf States affected by Hurricane Gustav. Steps the convention has taken include the formation of the Affected States Working Group and the establishment of an Affected States Information Center.

2008 Republican National Convention Launches First Day of Hurricane Relief Effort

2008 REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION LAUNCHES FIRST DAY OF HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORT
Convention Effort Includes Comfort Care Package Distribution, Text Message Alert System, and Coordinated Fundraising for Charitable Organizations

SAINT PAUL, MN -- Today, the 2008 Republican National Convention launched the first day of its Hurricane Gustav Relief Effort. The effort includes the formation of a center where volunteers will assemble and send 80,000 "comfort packages," a text message alert system, and a comprehensive effort to encourage Americans to donate to charities identified by the five Gulf Coast governors. These efforts augment the steps that the convention announced yesterday, which included the formation of the Affected States Working Group and the establishment of an Affected States Information Center.

Laura Bush and Cindy McCain

"We are deeply concerned about the safety and welfare of the residents of the Gulf States region. Senator McCain has asked us to put country first and shift our focus to assisting the Gulf State citizens, and we have coordinated a relief effort that answers his call to service. We are doing what Americans do best: helping our fellow citizens in need," said Rick Davis, campaign manager for McCain 2008.

Chairman of the Republican National Committee Robert M. "Mike" Duncan added, "The safety and well-being of the people of the Gulf States remains our top concern. Over the past 24 hours, we have moved quickly to mobilize people and resources to assist the Gulf States' residents -- both those who are in the region and our delegates in Saint Paul -- in any way we can."

Laura Bush and Cindy McCain

Comfort Care Packages

The 2008 Republican National Convention has joined with Target, FedEx, and the Red Cross to send 80,000 "comfort packages" to the Gulf Coast region. The packages will be assembled at the Minneapolis Convention Center in a staging area being assembled today. The packages will have basic necessities donated by Target, including toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, granola bars, and other prepackaged foods. The donated materials will arrive in Saint Paul on Wednesday at 8 a.m., and FedEx will ship the packages to the appropriate locations.

The 2008 Republican National Convention is helping coordinate the volunteer effort. We expect 200 volunteers, which will be working in 75 minute shifts beginning on Wednesday.

Text Message Alert System

We have launched a text message alert system to inform delegates and alternates of program changes and other information as soon as it becomes available. The convention is in continuous communication with all delegates, speakers, and program participants. All parties understand that the schedule for the convention will be dictated by the conditions on the ground in the Gulf States and are, therefore, subject to change. The campaign and the convention's first priority is the safety and security of those living in the areas where the hurricane will make landfall.

Charitable Donations

The governors of the states affected by the hurricane recommended five charitable organizations that Americans can donate to if they wish to contribute to the relief efforts. The 2008 Republican National Convention is working to coordinate and encourage donations to these groups. In addition, the McCain 2008 campaign has set up a phone bank at the Hilton in Minneapolis, which will help coordinate donations to these groups. The five groups are as follows:

Louisiana: AidMatrix (www.AidMatrix.org)
AidMatrix is a leading aid organization that mobilizes more than $1.5 billion in aid annually, worldwide. The donated goods, money and services benefit the lives of more than 65 million people.
Mississippi: Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund (www.MississippiRelief.com)
The Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund has been set up by Governor Haley Barbour to serve as the state's central clearinghouse for corporations, organizations and individuals to donate money, equipment, goods, services, volunteers and time to the hundreds of thousands of Mississippians who may be affected by Hurricane Gustav.
Alabama: Governor's Emergency Relief Fund (www.ServeAlabama.gov)
In preparation for the possibility of Hurricane Gustav impacting Alabama, Governor Bob Riley and the Governor's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives are accepting offers of goods, volunteers and financial donations.
Texas: Texas Responds (www.TexasResponds.org)
When activated by the State of Texas, Texas Responds serves as the state portal for non-cash donations such as goods and services.
Florida: Florida Disaster Fund (www.FloridaDisasterFund.org)
The mission of the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund is to raise funds to help Floridians recover from natural disasters by strengthening families and rebuilding communities.

The McCain 2008 campaign has also set up a web site, www.causegreater.com, where Americans can go to learn more about these organizations. In addition, the 2008 Republican National Convention's official web site is now being updated to focus on the charitable efforts the convention is now engaged in.

Prayer Service
A prayer service, hosted by Texas Governor Rick Perry and the Texas delegation, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Central Presbyterian Church in Saint Paul. The service will be led by Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. The Texas delegation has invited all other Gulf State delegations to participate.

Today's announcement is an update to the efforts announced yesterday, which included the formation of the Affected States Working Group and the establishment of an Affected States Information Center. The working group is comprised of representatives from each of the states in Hurricane Gustav's path. It is led by all five state party chairs from the affected area along with other delegation officials. The group communicates twice a day and is actively working to ensure that all affected delegates have the information and assistance they need. The group regularly briefs their delegates and convention planners, provides access to timely information and assistance, and gives input on appropriate steps that can be taken from Minnesota.

In addition, the Affected States Information Center, housed in the Xcel Energy Center, is now up and running. The center will remain open during the Xcel Energy Center's operating hours and serves as a central location where delegates can get news about the hurricane, weather reports, and information about rescue relief organizations; access to computers and phones; and the resources they need to address their situations back home. There are also representatives in the center that can contact Gulf State governors, if needed.
