George W. Bush 2007 State Of The Union Speech Excerpts

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
For Immediate Release
January 23, 2007

STATE OF THE UNION EXCERPTS
As Prepared for Delivery

The American people expect their elected leaders from both parties to work together on the important issues facing the Nation. Tonight the President will lay out an ambitious agenda, driven by bold and innovative concepts. He will discuss the importance of forging common ground with the new Congress and explain that to keep America safe, we must prevail in the war on terror.

“Some in this Chamber are new to the House and Senate – and I congratulate the democratic majority. Congress has changed, but our responsibilities have not…We are not the first to come here with government divided and uncertainty in the air. Like many before us, we can work through our differences, and achieve big things for the American people.”

“Our citizens don’t much care which side of the aisle we sit on – as long as we are willing to cross that aisle when there is work to be done. Our job is to make life better for our fellow Americans, and help them to build a future of hope and opportunity – and this is the business before us tonight.”

On our growing economy:
“A future of hope and opportunity begins with a growing economy – and that is what we have…Unemployment is low, inflation is low, and wages are rising. This economy is on the move – and our job is to keep it that way, not with more government but with more enterprise.”

On the importance of strengthening and re-authorizing No Child Left Behind this year:
“Five years ago, we rose above partisan differences to pass the No Child Left Behind Act…And because we acted, students are performing better in reading and math, and minority students are closing the achievement gap.”

“Now the task is to build on this success, without watering down standards ... without taking control from local communities ... and without backsliding and calling it reform…And we can make sure our children are prepared for the jobs of the future, and our country is more competitive, by strengthening math and science skills.”

On the President’s new health care initiatives:
“In all we do, we must remember that the best healthcare decisions are made not by government and insurance companies, but by patients and their doctors.”

On comprehensive immigration reform:
“Extending hope and opportunity in our country requires an immigration system worthy of America – with laws that are fair and borders that are secure. When laws and borders
are routinely violated, this harms the interests of our country… Yet…we cannot fully secure the border unless we take pressure off the border – and that requires a temporary worker program.”

On strengthening America’s energy security:
“Extending hope and opportunity depends on a stable supply of energy that keeps America’s economy running and America’s environment clean. For too long our Nation has been dependent on foreign oil. And this dependence leaves us more vulnerable to hostile regimes, and to terrorists – who could cause huge disruptions of oil shipments ... raise the price of oil ... and do great harm to our economy. It is in our vital interest to diversify America’s energy supply – and the way forward is through technology.”

On the war on terror:
“For all of us in this room, there is no higher responsibility than to protect the people of this country from danger…To win the war on terror we must take the fight to the enemy. >From the start, America and our allies have protected our people by staying on the offense. The enemy knows that the days of comfortable sanctuary, easy movement, steady financing, and free flowing communications are long over. For the terrorists, life since Nine-Eleven has never been the same.”

“Our military commanders and I have carefully weighed the options. We discussed every possible approach. In the end, I chose this course of action because it provides the best chance of success. Many in this chamber understand that America must not fail in Iraq – because you understand that the consequences of failure would be grievous and far reaching.”

“The war on terror we fight today is a generational struggle that will continue long after you and I have turned our duties over to others. That is why it is important to work together so our Nation can see this great effort through.”

“Both parties and both branches should work in close consultation. And this is why I propose to establish a special advisory council on the war on terror, made up of leaders in Congress from both political parties. We will share ideas for how to position America to meet every challenge that confronts us. And we will show our enemies abroad that we are united in the goal of victory.”

On American foreign policy:
“American foreign policy is more than a matter of war and diplomacy. Our work in the world is also based on a timeless truth: To whom much is given, much is required.
We hear the call to take on the challenges of hunger, poverty, and disease – and that is precisely what America is doing. We must continue to fight HIV/AIDS, especially on the continent of Africa.”

Congressman Duncan Hunter Makes It Official

For Immediate Release
January 23, 2007

HUNTER MAKES IT OFFICIAL

Congressman Duncan Hunter, serving the 52nd District of California, will be the first Republican candidate in South Carolina history to announce his official entry into the presidential race.

Hunter will announce his bid for the White House Thursday, January 25 at the Marriott Renaissance Park in Spartanburg South Carolina.

"I will speak about a new American sunrise of opportunity, faith and freedom for the citizens of our great nation," said Hunter.

Hunter, considered by many to be the most conservative Republican in the Presidential race, cites his chairmanship of the House Armed Services Committee and 26-years on that committee as credentials for his candidacy.

Hunter, who has chaired the House Armed Services Committee for the past four years, has devoted himself to ensuring that our military is second to none.  He has worked hard to secure the border with Mexico. Securing our nation's borders, protecting American workers from unfair competition and reversing one-way-street trade are issues that he has addressed.  "America's greatest strength is our freedom and its protection". Said Hunter

Hunter feels America needs a way ahead in the ongoing war against terrorists and a policy of economic opportunity, with a reaffirmation of faith in the principles of our founding fathers.  "I announce my candidacy with the support of my family fueled my confidence in our nation's potential for greatness," said Hunter.

The Hunter for President Website will be www.gohunter08.com.

Failor And Slifka Join Growing List Of McCain Supporters

ARLINGTON, VA - U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential exploratory committee today announced that two influential Iowa Republican leaders and political operatives have joined the team.

Ed Failor, Jr., Executive Vice President of Iowans for Tax Relief and Karen Slifka, Regional Political Director for the Republican National Committee (RNC) will serve as senior advisors to Senator McCain's presidential exploratory committee.

During the 2004 presidential election, Failor served as the executive director of the Iowa Victory campaign. Under his leadership, President Bush was the first Republican nominee to carry the Hawkeye State in 20 years.

"It is an honor to support a candidate who is committed to implementing common sense conservative principles," said Failor. "Senator McCain is the one candidate Iowans can count on to promote fiscal responsibility and a culture of life."

Slifka served as Midwest regional political director for President Bush's re-election campaign in 2004 and played a similar role at the RNC. Slifka's prior caucus experience includes working as state director for John Kasich's presidential exploratory committee in 1999 and as a grassroots consultant for Steve Forbes' presidential campaign. She will officially join the exploratory committee in February.

"Senator McCain has shown over a lifetime of public service that he is a capable leader who is ready to guide our country during these challenging times," Slifka said. "I'm confident that his conservative record will resonate with grassroots Republicans here in Iowa."

Senator McCain stated that he was pleased with the additions of two highly regarded individuals to his Iowa organization. "I'm extremely proud to have these two prominent conservatives backing my efforts in Iowa," McCain said. "This is further proof that common sense conservatism resonates at every level of the grassroots."

Patrick Ruffini Hired By Giuliani Campaign

Giuliani Hires E-Campaign Expert
By Chris Cillizza
January 22, 2007

"One of the real "gets" on the GOP side of that world is Patrick Ruffini, who served as the Web master of President Bush's 2004 reelection campaign and then served in a similar role at the Republican National Committee. Ruffini gained recognition in national Republican circles for his blog, which was one of the first serious attempts on the Republican side at building an online community.

Ruffini has signed on with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign as an e-campaign adviser. The hiring is only the latest sign that Giuliani is serious about a run for national office in 2008."

2008 Campaigns Realize Potential Of Web Video

On the Electronic Campaign Trail
Politicians Realize the Potential of Web Video
By Chris Cillizza and Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, January 22, 2007

"Playing defense is only one use of Web video. Equally important, the candidates and their staffs see Web-based video as an inexpensive and potentially significant tool for telling their campaign story without the filters of the traditional media.

Call it the YouTube effect, and it is only growing. The video-sharing site, which less than a year after its founding was bought by Google for $1.65 billion, has revolutionized the transfer of information via video, spawned a number of imitators and forced candidates to recalibrate choices, from their announcement strategies to their staffing decisions.

The accelerated use of campaign video is likely to continue throughout the 2008 campaign as technology opens new opportunities and challenges, with even more significant changes likely by 2012, when Internet Protocol television -- the equivalent of television channels based on the Web -- becomes more technically and financially feasible."
