Governor Richardson Statement On Veterans Day

Governor Richardson Statement on Veterans Day

DUBUQUE, IA-- New Mexico Governor and Democratic Presidential candidate Bill Richardson today issued the following statement in commemoration of America's veterans:

"We pause today to honor the brave men and women of our military, especially those who have sacrificed their lives serving their country. We owe each of them and their families a debt that we never can repay; we recognize and pay tribute to those that have given so much. Thank you for your service.

"We also remember our troops deployed around the world, and in particular, those fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have the best, most highly trained, and most dedicated military in the world. They have done, and continue to do, everything we have asked of them. In return for their service and their sacrifice, I believe it is incumbent upon every American to renew the sacred promise made to our military men and women.

"We must honor our troops by honoring the principles and qualities that have made this nation great: an unwavering respect for human rights, international law, and above all, the Constitution of the United States. We have lost our way over the past seven years. As President, I will be proud to lead the United States back to its rightful place as a beacon of honor and hope for the world.

"We must not turn our backs on our troops and their families once they leave the active-duty military. In times of peace, the transition from military to civilian life can be challenging. Often their MOS, or military job skill, does not translate to civilian life, and in many cases, their spouses have not worked in years because of deployment abroad. In times of war, the transition becomes much more difficult. The benefits currently allocated to these men and women do not adequately address the mental and physical wounds that war produces; they are grossly inadequate. This is a national crisis that, if not corrected soon, will turn into a national epidemic.

"As a nation, we have an obligation to give our veterans our best, as they have given us on the battlefield. It is a national tragedy that there are a large number of veterans and military families who now are homeless.

Tancredo Unveils New Media Television Ad “Tough on Terror”

Tancredo Unveils New Media Television Ad
“Tough on Terror” will begin airing in Iowa this week

(Des Moines, IA)-Presidential candidate Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) today unveiled a new hard-hitting television ad entitled “Tough on Terror” in Des Moines, IA. The ad depicts a terrorist who plants a bomb in a crowded shopping center in the United States while the voiceover assails, “…spineless politicians who refuse to defend our borders against those who come to kill.”

“The consequences of uncontrolled immigration are far more serious than our leaders want us to believe. The safety of Americans and the security of our way of life are on the line. We need action now,” Tancredo said in a prepared statement today.

While the television ad was the main attraction, Tancredo also introduced a complimentary radio ad in which he outlines his plan to resolve the problem this country faces from the irresponsible policies of Washington.

Tancredo concluded, “As President I promise never to be so stymied by political correctness as to hesitate to take the tough necessary steps to keep America safe and secure.”

Television ad: “Tough on Terror”

On screen: TeamTancredo.org
Paid for by Tancredo for a Secure America
Approved by Tom Tancredo

Con. Tancredo: Hi I’m Tom Tancredo and I approved this message because someone needs to say it.

Voiceover: There are consequences to open borders beyond the 20 million aliens who have come to take our jobs. Islamic terrorists now freely roam U.S. soil, Jihadists who froth with hate here to do as they have in London, Spain, Russia.

The price we pay for spineless politicians who refuse to defend our borders against those who come to kill.

{Explosion}

On Screen: Tancredo… before it’s too late.

Radio ad: “Tough on Terror 2”

Con. Tancredo: According to FBI reports, Al-Qaeda may be planning to strike at shopping malls here in America later this year, and the candidates for president are talking about health care and energy policy?

I’m Tom Tancredo and I say all issues pale in comparison to the fact that Islamic Jihadists are here and plotting our destruction. It’s time for real leadership in Washington, I will secure our borders and ports, I will stop all visa’s to nations that sponsor Terrorism and arrest and deport any alien who preaches violence and hatred whether that’s in coming from a Mosque or a street corner in a Mayday parade.

I’ll prosecute those who provide sanctuary to anyone who would harm us, deport all those who do not belong here, and put the military on the border if necessary, to keep them from coming back.

Leadership is about more than taking action after an attack, it’s about doing everything in your power to stop it, and I mean everything.

This is Tom Tancredo and I approved this ad because someone has to say it.

Female Voice: Paid for by Tancredo for a Secure America, call 1-888-GOTOM08 and ask for Rachael.

Obama Shows Organizational Strength In Minnesota, Iowa

Obama’s organizational strength triumphs in Iowa, Minnesota, too

ST. PAUL, Minn. – On Saturday, Nov. 10, 150 Obama supporters gathered in St. Paul to celebrate the official opening of the Minnesota Obama headquarters. Attendees included Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, St. Paul Councilmember-elect Melvin Carter, state representatives Willie Dominguez and John Lesch, state Senator Dick Cohen, Minneapolis Councilmember Robert Lilligren, former mayor of St. Paul Jim Scheibel, and Kim Ellison, wife of Congressman Keith Ellison.

The Minnesota campaign, which has grown to include 13 staff members, has been in the state for just over five weeks, and in that time has held a caucus and grassroots training in St. Paul that drew a crowd of over 400; caucus and grassroots trainings in every congressional district, every week; a coordinated canvass of eight Minnesota cities on a single Saturday where supporters knocked on over 2,500 doors; and individual canvasses every weekend and phonebanks every night. Last week, the campaign welcomed a visit from Obama's wife, Michelle, who spent over an hour at Hope Community in Minneapolis, discussing community organizing efforts with tenants and community members.

While Minnesota supporters gathered in St. Paul on Saturday, that same night in Iowa at the Jefferson-Jackson dinner, traditionally a landmark event in the run-up to the caucuses, Barack Obama delivered what the press widely reported was the best speech, and demonstrated the strength of his campaign organization, with Iowa Obama supporters representing one-third of all 9,000 attendees.

As David Yepsen of The Des Moines Register wrote, “The leading Democratic presidential candidates showed up for the Iowa Democratic Party’s big Jefferson Jackson Dinner Saturday night. Five of them gave really good speeches. Barack Obama’s was excellent. It was one of the best of his campaign.  The passion he showed should help him close the gap on Hillary Clinton by tipping some undecided caucus-goers his way….Should he win the Iowa caucuses, Saturday’s dinner will be remembered as one of the turning points in his campaign here, a point where he laid down the marker and began closing on Clinton, the national frontrunner.”

John McCain 2008 Launches New Television Ad, "Outrageous"

JOHN MCCAIN 2008 LAUNCHES NEW TELEVISION AD, "OUTRAGEOUS"

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today released a new television ad, entitled "Outrageous," to run statewide in New Hampshire and in the Boston market. The new ad focuses on John McCain's commitment to ending wasteful pork-barrel spending in Washington.
John McCain, named a "Taxpayer Hero" by Citizens Against Government Waste, has led the fight against wasteful spending. Time Magazine said McCain has "spent his entire Senate career exposing wasteful pork-barrel projects" while National Journal called him a "longtime foe of pork-barrel spending."

Long before it was politically popular, John McCain was leading a tough and often lonely fight against pork-barrel spending and government waste. McCain was an original co-sponsor of the Line Item Veto more than a decade ago and routinely votes against irresponsible spending bills. McCain was one of only four senators to vote against the pork-laden Highway Bill that contained the infamous "bridge to nowhere."

As John McCain said in New Hampshire this weekend, "It's pretty clear that Senator Clinton is running for president to continue business as usual. I'm running for president to put the business as usual crowd out of business."

Script for "Outrageous" (:30-TV)

ANNCR: 233 million for a bridge to nowhere.

Outrageous.

3 million to study the DNA of bears in Montana.

Unbelievable.

A million dollars for a Woodstock Museum -- in a bill sponsored by Hillary Clinton.

Predictable.

Who has the guts to stand up to wasteful government spending?

One man.

John McCain.

JOHN MCCAIN: I'll stop wasteful spending by Congress. And restore Americans' trust in their government.

JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

Sen. Biden Issued The Following Statement On Veterans Day

BIDEN KEEPS PROMISE TO VETERANS
Announces Reforms to Veterans Administration

Onawa, IA (November 11, 2007) – Today,  Sen. Joe Biden announced his plan to keep America's promise to veterans by reforming the Veterans Administration and making it more responsive to the needs of our veterans once they return home from the battlefield as well as our veterans who have already performed their service.

Sen. Biden believes that all veterans must have access to health care and that the Department of Veterans Affairs has a fundamental responsibility to address their varying care needs in a timely manner. His five-point plan for VA reform aims to improve the handling of claims, eliminate restrictions on veterans’ access to health care, accommodate the long-term care needs of veterans, ensure adequate treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and improve the provision of care to all veterans.

Sen. Biden issued the following statement:

“This Veterans’ Day we remember and celebrate the heroism and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans.  But we must do more than simply honor their service; we must keep our promise to provide them with quality care and services.  The VA system must be fixed.

“We have veterans, not just from Iraq and Afghanistan, but from Vietnam and Korea, who wait nearly two years for disability checks.  It takes, on average, 177 days for a VA regional office to process a claim, and it takes more than a year and a half to go through the appeals process.  This is unacceptable.

“Our praise for these heroes must be matched by action.  As President, I would make sure that the VA’s handling of claims was improved dramatically, eliminate restrictions on veterans’ access to health care, and accommodate the long-term care needs of veterans.  In addition, I would ensure that there was adequate treatment of traumatic brain injuries, which have affected so many of our soldiers.  My plan would create a presumption for TBI and PTSD that would allow soldiers to get treatment immediately instead of having to delay treatment because they have to prove their injury is related to their service. Finally, we need to improve the provision of care and make sure the transition from inpatient to outpatient care and from military to veteran status is seamless.

“In short, our commitment to those who have admirably served our country must be without question.  Just as we must protect them and give them everything they need on the battlefield, we owe our brave soldiers the same support upon their return home.  This is our sacred obligation.”

Mike Huckabee Salutes Our Nation's Veteran

Mike Huckabee Salutes Our Nation's Veterans

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Former Arkansas Governor and Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee issued the following statement today in honor of Veterans Day:

"Today we honor American military men and women who have served, or are currently serving, our country so we may enjoy the blessings of freedom and democracy. We owe a debt of gratitude to these brave individuals, as well as to those who have paid the ultimate price, so that we may be free to reach our fullest potential. Their sacrifices for our grateful nation must never be forgotten. It is our duty to ensure that their faithful service is truly recognized by upholding our promises to provide the opportunities and support they need.

"Janet and I pray for our troops as well as their families, who keep the home fires burning while their loved ones are away. May God bless our veterans and their families, and may God continue to bless America."

Obama Statement On Veterans Day

Obama Statement on Veterans Day

CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Senator Barack Obama today released the following statement on Veterans Day.

"As we mark Veterans Day, all of America must speak with one voice to America’s veterans: we honor your service, we are in awe of your sacrifice, and we will do everything that it takes to be there for you just as you have been there for us. Our veterans are a part of an unbroken line of Americans who have borne the greatest burden for our freedom – from those who threw off the tyranny of a King to those who fight bravely and brilliantly under our flag today. Keeping faith with those who serve is a cornerstone of American patriotism. Let us rededicate ourselves to honoring those who have served by providing them with the services, support, and respect that they have earned."

Edwards Calls On America To Meet Moral Test Of This Generation In Veterans Day Speech

EDWARDS CALLS ON AMERICA TO MEET MORAL TEST OF THIS GENERATION IN VETERANS DAY SPEECH
Releases new policy book, entitled “Plan to Build One America,” outlining his bold vision for the country

Des Moines, Iowa – Today, Senator John Edwards delivered a major thematic speech in which he called upon Americans to honor the sacrifice of the millions of veterans in the generations of Americans that came before us by rising up to meet the great moral test of our generation – ensuring that our children have a better, more prosperous life than we’ve had. Edwards’ speech comes on the heels of a rousing performance at the Iowa Democratic Party’s Jefferson Jackson Dinner, as well as the launch of his first television ad in Iowa and the endorsement of the 10,000 Iowa-caucus-goer strong Caucus for Priorities.

“For twenty generations, Americans have kept the one moral commandment that makes us American – to pass a better future on to our children than we received,” said Edwards. “But everywhere I travel today – in every corner of America – I hear uncertainty – a real concern that we could be the first generation of Americans that fails to leave our children a better future than our parents left us.”

Edwards continued: “To be the first generation of Americans to fail that commandment would be an abomination. This is the great moral test of our generation – to ensure that we give our children a better future than we inherited, just as our parents did for us.”

In keeping with his commitment to make sure his positions are clear, Edwards also unveiled an 80-page “Plan to Build One America” book laying out his policy proposals on a wide range of issues. Over the next few weeks, the campaign will deliver more than 100,000 copies of the book to Iowa caucus-goers. It will also be available to download from the campaign website, www.johnedwards.com.

“Over the course of the last year, I have offered detailed, honest plans and specific, forthright proposals,” said Edwards. “But I don’t want anyone in Iowa to have to take my word for it, so I’ve gone and put them all on paper. Iowans have a right to know where I stand and what I'll do as president. You are the guardians of what kind of president we'll have, and whether America meets the great challenges we face.  I'm not afraid to stand here and answer your questions, and I want you to have all the facts.”

Edwards’ policy proposals focus on four core principles: First, standing up for working and middle class families and passing universal health care; second, restoring America’s moral leadership around the world and ending the war in Iraq; third, investing in a better future for our children by improving schools, making college affordable and stopping global warming; and fourth, creating opportunity for all.

Edwards has dedicated his campaign to standing up for hard-working Americans who have no voice in Washington. And his campaign continues to gain strength in Iowa. Last month, Edwards reached an important milestone as he became the first candidate to visit – and answer questions from Iowans – in all 99 counties. Edwards is the first candidate in the race to announce steering committees in all 99 Iowa counties. And he is the only candidate with both County Chairs and Rural County Chairs in every county. Edwards has also earned the endorsements of the Iowa State Council of the Service Employees International Union and 11 other State Councils across the nation – including, most recently, New Hampshire. This is in addition to endorsements from the United Steelworkers, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners in America, the Iowa Postal Workers Union, the Transport Workers Union of America, and the United Mine Workers of America.

Excerpts from Edwards’ speech on Sunday in Iowa follow.

For twenty generations, Americans have kept the one moral commandment that makes us American – to pass a better future on to our children than we received.

My father had to borrow $50 to bring me home from the hospital. Home was a small house in the mill village owned by the mill where my father worked. I am here today because, like all the people my father worked with in the mill, my parents got up every day believing in the promise of America, and they worked hard – no matter what obstacles were thrown against them – to give me the chance for a better life.

But everywhere I travel today – in every corner of America – I hear uncertainty – a real concern that we could be the first generation of Americans that fails to leave our children a better future than our parents left us.

To be the first generation of Americans to fail that commandment would be an abomination.

This is the great moral test of our generation – to ensure that we give our children a better future than we inherited, just as our parents did for us.

Lobbyists and corporate power runs rampant in Washington, subverting our government to its own ends – NAFTA style trade deals pad corporate profits but cost millions of American jobs; so-called prescription drug reform benefits drug companies, not patients; tax breaks and loopholes are showered on the very wealthiest while working Americans struggle to get by.

If we have the courage to offer real change and the determination to change Washington – then we will meet the great moral test of our generation. We will leave our children a greater America – One America, where every man, woman and child is blessed with the same, great opportunity and held to the same, just rules.

We need to create opportunity for all – the promise of America is a promise made to every American – black, white; gay, straight; healthy, sick; working, retired; rich, poor; born, bred, or just arrived. Every man, woman, and child in this country deserves the same, great chance. And I believe there is a sacred contract between our country and our veterans and armed forces. We have a moral obligation to take care of them and their families.

We must no longer live in vague acknowledgment of the corruption and incompetence that threatens the promise of our children’s future while saying to ourselves, the problem’s just too big, there’s nothing we can do about it.

I stand before you today to say – that is not good enough. There is something we can do. Our founders placed the ultimate power in our hands – ours alone. When we take its reins, it is irresistible. If someone tells you there is nothing we can do, you tell them the ghost of generations proves them wrong – there is nothing we cannot do.

Let us stand up and give everything we have as all those before us have done.

In their name, let the world know that the fight for a greater America begins today. For universal health care, ending poverty, honoring our veterans, reclaiming our democracy, and ending the war in Iraq. For opportunity, equality, justice, and the idea of America.

This is the moral test of our generation. We can meet it. We will meet it.

Statement of Hillary Clinton Honoring our Veterans

"We pause today to honor all of the brave men and women who have honored us by wearing our nation's uniform.  Through their service and sacrifice, our veterans defended our country, our freedom, and our values.  We could never adequately repay the debt that is owed. But what we can do and must do is ensure that veterans receive the benefits they have earned through their service and continue strengthening the country they fought for and love."
