THE CHARLESTON POST AND COURIER ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

"Eight years ago we urged voters in South Carolina's Republican presidential primary to support John McCain. His record since then has left us even more convinced that the Arizona senator should be the 2008 Republican presidential nominee ... For the good of the country, give tried and trustworthy Sen. John McCain the chance to be president with a much-deserved S.C. Republican primary victory." -- The Charleston Post And Courier

On Saturday, South Carolina voters will once more have the chance to give him the boost he needs to be the Republican nominee in November. "But we support McCain not simply because of a laundry list of his stances but because of his consistency of values. As a certified war hero and a veteran of 25 years in Congress, he has little to prove to himself or voters. You take him as he is, or you don't...

In this diverse field of GOP candidates, McCain stands out as the one best suited to sit in the White House and lead the nation in these challenging times.

Reno Gazette-Journal Endorses Governor Mitt Romney

RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL ENDORSES GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY

"Romney Is GOP's Best Candidate"
Reno Gazette-Journal
Editorial
January 18, 200

"The best candidate – and the one who would give the party its strongest chance in the fall – is former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"Romney is a successful businessman who showed his ability to get voters to cross party lines when he won the governor's office in Massachusetts, home of the Kennedys, Michael Dukakis and John Kerry. He left that office with his reputation and his relationships intact.

"Romney's most remarkable feat, however, was his stewardship of the Salt Lake City Olympics. He showed that he could bring disparate groups together, clean up a mess left by his predecessor, and to put on possibly the most successful games ever.

"Romney's No. 1 opponent since the New Hampshire primary is Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain. McCain is a genuine war hero. But he's also a government insider who has outlived scandal."

"Republicans need a candidate who represents conservative values, builds bipartisan support and signals change for a restless electorate.

"Romney is that candidate."

JOHN MCCAIN 2008 LAUNCHES WEB AD: "CHARACTER IN SPADES"

COLUMBIA, SC -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today launched a new web ad, entitled "Character In Spades." The ad sets the record straight about John McCain's record of service and sacrifice.

"Character In Spades" will appear on the website of The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina.

Script for "Character In Spades" (:60-Web)

NBC'S TIM RUSSERT: McCain spent five years in a box, baking in the heat.

FORMER LOUISIANA GOVERNOR BUDDY ROEMER: Broken bones. Torture. Mistreatment. Malnourished.

FORMER POW AND MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT COL. BUD DAY, USAF (RET.): I took one look at him, he weighed about 95 pounds, and I said, 'These people dumped this guy on me so they could claim that we let him die.'

ROEMER: Hanging on by his fingernails, he stayed an American.

COL. DAY: But John McCain didn't have any intention of dying. That wasn't in his program.

RUSSERT: He can't raise his arms above this height because of the pain. Someone is going to attack his patriotism and his courage? Please.

FORMER POW LT. COLONEL ORSON SWINDLE, USMC (RET.): When he was in prison and about to die and they gave him a chance to come home and he knew the damage that would be done should he accept something like that, his character came through in spades and says no way.

JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

John McCain Unveils Economic Stimulus Plan

JOHN MCCAIN UNVEILS ECONOMIC STIMULUS PLAN

ARLINGTON, VA -- Today in Columbia, South Carolina, John McCain unveiled his plan to stimulate the American economy. McCain's plan will lower the corporate tax rate, allow expensing of equipment and technology investments and establish a permanent research and development tax credit.

"Now is the time to act to stimulate our economy," said John McCain. "I offer a genuinely conservative, pro-growth plan to provide much-needed stimulus to our economy, creating more prosperity and opportunity for American families. Unlike the Democrats' tired ideas of tax and spend, my plan will cut taxes, spur investment and innovation and make American business more competitive in the global marketplace."

Jack Kemp applauded John McCain's economic stimulus initiative, stating, "John McCain's pro-growth stimulus plan is exactly what our economy needs today. As president, John McCain will provide principled leadership to ensure our economy remains the envy of the free world."

JOHN MCCAIN: BOLD SOLUTIONS TO STIMULATE THE AMERICAN ECONOMY

· Cut The Corporate Tax Rate From 35 To 25 Percent.

A lower corporate tax rate is essential to U.S. competitiveness. America was once a low-tax business environment, but as our trade partners lowered their rates, America failed to keep pace, leaving us with the second-highest rate among the world's advanced economies.[1]

Cutting the corporate tax will expand the U.S. economy, creating jobs and opportunities for prosperity. A recent analysis of tax policy options estimated that a cut less than half this size could increase long-term growth by 0.5 percent, or $100 billion in a single year.[2]

Lower corporate taxes leads to higher wages. Recent studies have shown that corporate taxes are in large part passed on to labor through lower wages. One study noted that a one percent hike in the corporate tax results in a 0.8 percent decrease in manufacturing wages.[3] Accordingly, cutting corporate taxes can increase wages for American workers.

· Allow First-Year Deduction, Or "Expensing", Of Equipment And Technology Investments.

Expensing of equipment and technology will provide an immediate boost to capital expenditures and reward investments in cutting-edge technologies.

The additional investment stimulated by a change to expensing of equipment and technology will drive to economic growth. A recent estimate of a modest expensing provision predicted a gain of 1.5 percent in long term economic growth.[4]

The complexity of our tax code needlessly burdens American businesses and families with $140 billion in compliance costs.[5] Allowing expensing will eliminate the need for complicated accounting for depreciation.

· Establish Permanent Tax Credit Equal To 10 Percent Of Wages Spent On R&D.

The R&D tax credit will simplify the tax code, reward activity in the United States, and make us more competitive with other countries.

A permanent credit will provide an incentive to innovate and remove uncertainty. At a time when our companies need to be more competitive, we need to provide a permanent incentive to innovate, and remove the uncertainty now hanging over businesses as they make R&D investment decisions.

· These Are Essential First Steps On The Path To Fundamental Tax Reform, Which Could Increase U.S. GDP By As Much As 10 Percent Over The Long Term.[6]

SENATOR LEAHY ENDORSES BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Cites Obama's Ability to Restore America's Standing in the World

Chicago, IL – Today, Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) endorsed Senator Barack Obama for President, citing his unique ability to restore America's standing in the world, end the war in Iraq, provide health care for all Americans, and rally this nation around a common purpose.

Chairman Leahy said, "Barack Obama is the best candidate to reintroduce America to the world – and restore hope in our country.  Barack Obama represents the America we once were and want to be again.    When Barack Obama is President we will lead with hope, opening the doors of opportunity to all, realizing the potential of our great nation for its citizens and as a leader of the free world.    Barack Obama will be a President who once again believes, 'Yes, we can.'  That is why I am endorsing Barack Obama to be the next President of the United States."

Senator Obama said, "I am proud to have the support of Senator Leahy.   Senator Leahy had the judgment and courage to vote against the Iraq war, and he's been a champion of our rights here at home, and of human rights around the world. He is a leader guided by integrity, respect for our Constitution and a love of this country.   I look forward to working with him to stand up to the special interests, rally Democrats and Republicans together to get things done, and bring about change we can believe in."
