THE MYRTLE BEACH SUN NEWS ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

"S.C. voters who want the president who replaces George W. Bush next January to be a Republican have little option but to support Sen. John McCain in Saturday's S.C. GOP primary. ... [H]e well may be the only Republican candidate who could win in November ... He understands that America must root its foreign policy in robust diplomacy and vigorous, well-trained, well-deployed military forces. He understands that federal spending restraint is the key to relieving the economic misery of the American middle class, that massive new open-ended entitlement programs would be a mistake. And he knows how to work across party lines to forge compromises that work well for the American people." -- The Sun News

Excerpts From "McCain In Republican Primary"

Senator Is GOP's Best Hope Of Keeping The Presidency

Editorial
The Sun News (Myrtle Beach, SC)

S.C. voters who want the president who replaces George W. Bush next January to be a Republican have little option but to support Sen. John McCain in Saturday's S.C. GOP primary. The gentleman has broad appeal to the independent voters who decide every presidential election. For that reason, he well may be the only Republican candidate who could win in November, bucking the national pro-Democratic tide wrought by the failures of the Bush administration and the previous Republican Congresses.

John McCain Statement On Michigan Primary

JOHN MCCAIN STATEMENT ON MICHIGAN PRIMARY

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today released the following statement:

Well, my friends, for a minute there in New Hampshire I thought this campaign might be getting easier. But you know what? We've gotten pretty good at doing things the hard way too. And I think we've shown them, we don't mind a fight.

Today, the people of Michigan have spoken. I respect their decision, and I commend them for shouldering their responsibilities as citizens of the greatest nation on earth. I am very thankful for the courtesy and consideration you gave our campaign; for braving the cold and snow to listen to me and to give me the opportunity to listen to you; and especially so to those of you who bestowed upon me the great privilege of your vote. And, of course, I am deeply grateful to our Michigan team and to the many dedicated volunteers who gave so generously of their time and labor and kept us competitive even in some pretty challenging moments. I will not forget you, and I will not let you down.

I want to thank my wife, Cindy and our children for their hard work and for their faith in me. And all of you here tonight, who are ready for the challenge ahead. God bless you all as you have blessed me.

I congratulate Governor Romney on his victory tonight. He and his campaign worked hard and effectively to make sure Michigan voters welcomed their native son with their support. You have won the round and earned your celebration tonight. I salute you, and offer you my genuine good wishes for the night.

We fell a little short tonight. But we have no cause to be discouraged or to second guess what we might have done differently. We did what we always try to do: we went to Michigan and told people the truth. I am as committed now as I have ever been to making sure that no state, whether its Michigan or South Carolina or anywhere in this blessed country, is left behind in the global economy. But that global economy is here to stay and it is, by its nature, constantly changing. To compete more successfully in it we must better prepare American workers and students to seize its opportunities. That is how we will build a stronger and more prosperous America. That is what I told the people of Michigan. And I don't believe I could have honestly told them anything else.

Now, it is South Carolina's turn to decide. I have long admired the deep patriotism of the people of this state. So many of your sons and daughters risk their lives today to keep the rest of us safe, as so many South Carolinians have done in past wars. I am humbled by their example, but proud to claim, that their cause is my cause. I have no intention of giving one inch of ground; tiring of one moment of the fight; or letting the politics of the day stop me from doing what must be done to keep the country we love safe, prosperous and proud. In this great struggle against radical Islamic extremism, I promise you, we will never surrender. They will.

I'm running for President to defeat an enemy for whom no attack is too cruel, and who will not stop attacking us until they are defeated. The challenge will require experienced and proven leadership. And, my friends, I can honestly say, I have prepared my entire life for this moment. In uniform and in office, in war and peace, I have learned how to lead a nation at war. I know how to keep us safe. I have been involved in every major national security challenge of our time. I have met and taken the measure of the world's leaders; those who are our friends and those who are not. I understand the capabilities, the needs and the sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces better than any other candidate in this race. And I intend to be a Commander-in-Chief who will provide them leadership that is as strong, principled and tireless as their service to our country. They have earned a thousand times over our gratitude, and, most importantly, our unwavering dedication to making certain that they do not sacrifice in vain. I will not let them down, so help me God.

I am so proud, my friends, to be an American, and never more so than when our country confronts a great challenge. For I have learned through long experience, that while we are stronger than our enemies in men and material, we are stronger still in ideals. I have pledged my life to those ideals, and I run for President to defend them still. Our cause is America. Her greatness is our hope; her strength our protection; her goodness the hope of mankind. It is the cause I have served my entire adult life, and with your help I will keep serving her a little while longer.

Tonight, we congratulate another candidate's campaign. But tomorrow we get up and fight. It is your turn South Carolina. We are going to fight for your votes and we're going to win this primary and the nomination of our party, and we're going to be proud of the way we do it. So stand up, my friends, stand up, stay strong, get busy, keep fighting and lets go win this thing. Thank you and good night.

Senator Pete Domenici Endorses John McCain For President

SENATOR PETE DOMENICI ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced that New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici has endorsed the candidacy of John McCain for the Republican nomination for president. Senators Domenici and McCain spoke by phone today, and Sen. Domenici issued the following statement:

"Today I am very pleased to endorse my colleague, Sen. John McCain, for the Republican nomination for president.

"My many years working with John McCain persuade me that he is the best candidate on the issues upon which I have spent most of my career -- deficit reduction, federal spending reform, a strong military, and the increased use of nuclear power for electricity generation in this time of global climate change. John McCain's leadership in the fight for the balanced budget we produced in the late 1990s was critical. His strong voice was key to producing such a balanced budget for the first time in four decades. John McCain's work on crucial water issues in the West and Southwest shows that he understands all regions of our nation and the challenges they face.

"As important, has been John McCain's consistent and courageous stand on the Iraq War and our fight against terrorism. I believe, based upon my years on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and my work with Sen. McCain, that he will bring the strongest leadership to what I consider the most important question facing America -- how we defend ourselves against Islamic extremists bent on destroying this nation. And, despite my own personal misgivings last year, Sen. McCain was, and continues to be, right on the American military surge in Iraq and the strategy outlined by General David Petraeus. John displayed the kind of courage and consistency a president must have.

"No one else in the field has better credentials on military policy, national security, and fiscal policy than my friend, John McCain."

John McCain thanked Senator Domenici, stating, "I am grateful to Senator Domenici for his support of my candidacy. Pete is a leader in the U.S. Senate who is dedicated to environmental conservation and, as a member of the Indian Affairs Committee, has committed himself to addressing the challenges facing America's Native communities. He proudly represents the people of New Mexico, and I am proud to have him working on my behalf in the Western states."

THE DAYTONA BEACH NEWS-JOURNAL ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

"Arizona Sen. John McCain's candidacy stands out on several grounds: experience, a record of bipartisanship, moderation on critical issues (immigration, energy, global warming) ... and more inclination to speak unpopular truths, even if it costs him votes." -- Daytona Beach News-Journal

McCain's Experience, Moderation Stand Out

Arizona Sen. John McCain's candidacy stands out on several grounds: experience, a record of bipartisanship, moderation on critical issues (immigration, energy, global warming), less inclination to exploit personal faith or forced folksiness to political advantage, and more inclination to speak unpopular truths, even if it costs him votes.

McCain is neither a newcomer -- he's been in the Senate 22 years and was in the House of Representatives for four -- nor a prototypical insider. The Republican establishment preferred to back George W. Bush in the 2000 election, due in part to McCain's independence. Going back to his days as a congressman during the Reagan administration, McCain has been unafraid to follow his conscience even when his vote went against the party line. One early, mostly forgotten example during McCain's first year in Congress: He voted in the minority and against extending President Reagan's deployment of U.S. Marines in Beirut in 1983. Twenty-five days later, a suicide bomber killed 241 Marines as they slept in their barracks. ...

Eight years ago, McCain easily won the New Hampshire Republican primary and looked ready to roll through subsequent primaries aboard his "Straight Talk Express," as he called his campaign bus. His appeal to independents and conservative Democrats was apparent until he was routed by Bush in South Carolina, following one of the ugliest primary campaigns in the nation's history. ... Today, he looks rejuvenated, determined and ready to lead Republicans in the November election.

The Florida Legislature's decision to move the presidential primaries to Jan. 29 -- an attempt to make the state more important in the nominating process -- backfired. ...

But Florida remains important -- and will be more so if, as some think, the national parties recant before the conventions and let all the delegates in.

So voters should not stay home. Go the polls Jan. 29 and participate in selecting the party candidates for president. ...

THE BRADENTON HERALD ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

"With solid domestic policies and vital experience in foreign affairs, McCain is the right Republican candidate at the right time in history. Above all else, this nation needs a strong leader, one who can be trusted. John McCain is that kind of leader." -- Bradenton Herald

The oft-told story about John McCain's military service resonates to this day because it says so much about his integrity, strength and patriotism.

After being shot down and taken prisoner during the Vietnam War -- and suffering many beatings -- he was set to be released after the North Vietnamese learned his father was a prominent U.S. admiral. His captors wanted to score propaganda points. McCain, though, insisted prisoners held longer be freed first. He was kept in prison -- for five years in all -- and beaten again and again.

Even Hollywood would have a tough time matching that heroic plot line.

Today, McCain continues to be a man of strong conviction and unquestionable character. His leadership skills and experience make him the best Republican candidate in the field, and we support his nomination.

Kalamazoo Gazette, Livingston County Daily Press & Argus, Port Huron Times-Herald And Jackson Citizen Patriot Endorse John McCain

"McCain is our pick, in part, because we believe he would be the best standard-bearer for the GOP in November. He would have the broadest appeal in a general election. But more important, we believe he would be the better president of those running in the Republican field. [McCain] knows about enduring adversity in a way that none of the other candidates could possibly know. He certainly has more experience in foreign policy matters than the others. He knows how to work with both Republicans and Democrats." -- Kalamazoo Gazette
"McCain is a solid conservative whose views resonate with Livingston County Republicans. He is a pragmatic, tested politician who will forge necessary alliances, whether with Democrats when bipartisan solutions are needed or with other nations in battling terrorism. ... Perhaps most important to Republicans, McCain is the conservative that will likely fare best in November against whomever the Democrats nominate." -- Livingston County Daily Press & Argus

"McCain is the one who deserves the victory. The state's voters gave McCain a stunning victory eight years ago. There are strong reasons to do so again. In a field of capable candidates, McCain shines." -- Port Huron Times-Herald

"Fundamentally, [McCain] is a straight shooter who has stood by our involvement in Iraq and the need for immigration reform even if it has cost him votes. On Thursday, McCain candidly acknowledged that some jobs have left Michigan and South Carolina, another upcoming primary state, for good. While Romney has shifted positions on substantive issues, there's no doubt where McCain stands. ... McCain or Romney would do the job well, but our vote is for McCain." -- Jackson Citizen Patriot

Editorial

When the 2008 presidential campaign began so long ago, everyone believed the Iraq War would be the defining issue. But as violence lessened, talk turned to health care, immigration and the sputtering economy. Now, everyone's talking about change, change, change.

America's desire for change taps a yearning to feel optimistic about the future again, to feel confident that the country is headed in the right direction. But change for change's sake is a risky proposition. More important is a clear sense of purpose, a strong set of values and the ability to get things done.

In our considered opinion, Arizona Sen. John McCain is the Republican presidential candidate best prepared to lead America forward in a muscular yet compassionate way. Today we recommend him for your consideration.
