ABC News, WMUR-TV and Facebook Host Back-To-Back Debates in New Hampshire

ABC News' Tahman Bradley Reports: Days before Granite State residents head to the polls to vote in the nation's first presidential primary, ABC News, Hearst Argyle's WMUR-TV and Facebook host back-to-back Democratic and Republican presidential debates in New Hampshire on Saturday, Jan 5, 2008.

The 90 minute debates, which take place on the campus of St. Anselm in Manchester, come two days after the Iowa caucuses.

ABC's "World News" anchor Charles Gibson will moderate with additional questions from WMUR anchor and political director Scott Spradling.

The first debate airs at 7:00 pm ET/PT on the ABC Television Network with the second debate immediately following it.

The order of the debates will be decided later by a coin toss.

"Coming on the heels of the Iowa Caucuses, these back-to-back primetime events will let voters in New Hampshire and throughout the country see the candidates challenge each other at a moment in the campaign when the stakes couldn't be higher," ABC News President David Westin said in a statement.

"WMUR is proud of its tradition of informing New Hampshire voters," added WMUR President and General Manager Jeffrey Bartlett. "We're excited to once again produce these important debates."

NPR And Iowa Public Radio Announce Details For Democratic Debate On December 4

NPR AND IOWA PUBLIC RADIO ANNOUNCE DETAILS FOR LIVE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE ON DECEMBER 4
ALL DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES CONFIRMED TO PARTICIPATE

Washington, D.C.; November 19, 2007 – The NPR News and Iowa Public Radio national Democratic Presidential debate, to be broadcast and webcast live from 1:00-3:00PM (CT) on Tuesday, December 4, will be held at the State Historical Museum in Des Moines, with NPR News journalists and hosts Steve Inskeep, Michele Norris and Robert Siegel as moderators.

The two-hour event, leading up to the Iowa Caucus, will offer the first audio-only debate of the presidential race and will repeat the format introduced in 2004 by NPR and the NPR Member Stations of Iowa. All major Democratic candidates are confirmed to attend. The setting is relaxed: the candidates sit closely together around a U-shaped table, with no studio audience or video cameras. Breaking away from the question-and-answer structure traditionally presented by the television networks, the NPR/IPR debate will feature three areas of discussion and the moderators will enable the candidates to conduct a dialogue with each other. The debate will take place in the State Historical Museum’s new “Caucus Iowa” exhibit, featuring history and memorabilia about the first-in-the-nation event.

The NPR/IPR 2004 debate aired nationally on NPR Member stations and was extensively praised by the media and by listeners for its thoughtful pace, depth of conversation and interaction between the participants. Comparing it to the televised versions, The Dallas Morning News said, “We actually learned from the candidates in this one.”

The first broadcast of the debate will be exclusive to NPR Member stations around the country; many stations will also rebroadcast it that evening and in other time periods. The debate will also air on Sirius Satellite Radio, in more than 150 countries through NPR Worldwide Service and on American Forces Radio reaching U.S. military around the world. The debate will be streamed lived on NPR.org and numerous Member stations’ websites. Following the initial exclusive broadcast and webcast, NPR will make the recording fully accessible to all media outlets and individuals, without license restrictions; it will also be available for permanent on-demand streaming at NPR.org and via NPR Member stations’ sites.

NPR and IPR are working with the Republican presidential candidates to reschedule the forum originally planned for December 3. The leading Republican candidates cited scheduling conflicts and multiple debate requests from news and political party organizations. NPR is currently working closely with them to identify another suitable date and location.

NPR programs reach more than 26 million listeners weekly, and NPR Member stations have a weekly audience of more than 30 million people. Iowa Public Radio reaches more than 240,000 weekly listeners across the state.

Belmont Chosen As Site For 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate

Belmont Chosen as Site for 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate

The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) announced today that Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., will host the Town Hall Presidential Debate on October 7, 2008. Belmont was one of 16 sites nationwide under consideration to host one of three presidential, or one vice presidential, debates. Tennessee has been home to three former United States Presidents—Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk—but this will be the first time a presidential debate has been held in Tennessee.

“It is a distinct privilege to be chosen to host the Town Hall Presidential Debate,” Belmont President Bob Fisher said. “This opportunity will provide an invaluable educational experience to our students, allowing them to observe firsthand our nation’s political process and to be participants in American history. We are also pleased that the candidates and all of our distinguished guests will have an opportunity to witness the many benefits offered by the greater Nashville community.”

The Presidential Debate at Belmont will be held in the Curb Event Center, home of the NCAA Division-I Belmont Bruins basketball and volleyball teams and host site of the live CMT Music Awards show two years in a row. With a generous gift from the Mike Curb Family Foundation, The Curb Event Center opened in 2003. Seating 5,500 and equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, the versatile, in-the-round facility is ideal for the Town Hall format, in which citizens propose questions directly to the candidates. The debate is expected to attract more than 2,500 members of the media to Nashville, along with the candidates’ campaigns and supporters, and will be viewed by millions worldwide.

The CPD was established in 1987 to ensure that the debates provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners. Its primary purpose is to sponsor and produce debates for the United States leading presidential and vice presidential candidates and to undertake research and educational activities relating to the debates. The nonprofit, nonpartisan organization sponsored all the general election debates in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Civic organizations and state and local government officials have supported Belmont’s bid for the presidential debate. Former Nashville mayor Bill Purcell, Tennessee governor Phil Bredesen and senators Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander, and congressman Jim Cooper all wrote letters in support of Belmont and bringing one of the debates to Tennessee. In his letter to the CPD, Governor Bredesen wrote, “The Presidential Debates would find a compatible home at Belmont University where students with inquisitive minds take their roles as future citizens of our community, nation and world very seriously.”

“Hosting the debate at Belmont will engage our students in the political process through invaluable first-hand participation,” Dan McAlexander, Provost at Belmont, said. “Belmont takes seriously its mission to prepare its students for success in the real world, and serving as host site for the presidential debate will give our students invaluable tools in critical thinking and practical experience as they take an active role in what will surely be an historical election.”
