An Advantage to Being Out of Office in 2008?

Link: LA Times Article

Do candidates that are out of office have an adavantage running for president in 2008?

"...as many as six Democrats and five Republicans — who might seek the 2008 presidential nominations while out of office.

This prospect is sure to revive an old debate among political professionals: Does the race for the presidency favor candidates who hold an elective office, or those who don't?"

RNC Invites Cities To Host 2008 Republican National Convention

WASHINGTON – In beginning the process of selecting a host city for the 2008 Republican National Convention, the Republican National Committee (RNC) yesterday presented request for proposals to 31 cities. The request includes an outline of the specifications for hosting the convention and a request for preliminary information that will assist the RNC Site Selection Committee in evaluating each interested city.

Cities that received 2008 request for proposals are: Anaheim, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Memphis, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, and Tampa.

“We are excited to begin the process of selecting a city to host our 2008 convention,” RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman said.

“We have had a lot of interest from a variety of cities across the country and look forward to finding a city that will help us showcase our positive agenda for America,” added RNC Co-Chairman and Site Selection Committee Chair Jo Ann Davidson.

Cities were informed that the RNC Site Selection Committee will hold individual meetings in Washington, D.C. with representatives from all interested cities to discuss convention criteria, logistics and the site selection process. Cities that did not receive a request for proposal but would like to be considered can contact the RNC.

The Site Selection Committee will decide on a list of finalist cities by mid-summer of 2006. The Committee plans to visit only those finalist cities during the late-summer and expects to make a final selection on the Host City no later than February 1, 2007.

The RNC will select dates for the convention in the coming weeks.

John McCain '08 Media Strategy

John Friedman's Article in Marketwatch concerning John McCain's '08 media strategy includes this quote about previous campaigns.

"McCain is realistic about the topsy-turvy nature of presidential politics, too much so to make any hard and fast predictions. Yes, he conceded, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton was indeed the "odds-on favorite" to seize the Democratic nomination in 2008. "But we all remember Ed Muskie and George Romney," he added, referring to two candidates who were heavily favored to lock up nominations from their parties in 1972 and 1968, respectively, but fell short in the end"

Evan Bayh 2008 Bumper Sticker Slogan

Politcal Wire's "Quote of the Day" features Evan Bayh talking in the Des Moines Register about a possible 2008 bumper sticker slogan.

"The former Indiana governor has said he will make his official decision on whether to run for president after the 2006 elections. The Iowa caucuses are expected to lead off the presidential nominating process in 2008.

He joked about a bumper sticker that could play off his last name, pronounced "buy."

"I kind of like 'Bayh-partisan,' " he told Democrats at a lunch meeting in Des Moines."

This slogan was previously used by his father, Birch Bayh (candidate for president in 1976) on various state and national campaigns.

Iowa True Blue Blog

Gordon R. Fischer, who served as Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party from 2002 to 2004 began his blog with this statement.

"On This Blog, I want to talk about Iowa politics and policy. It is my hope to be guided by five simple principles:

*Community: the idea each of us should try to share with the world as a whole.

*Responsibility: the idea each of us are accountable for our own actions and omissions.

*Patriotism: the idea we live in a wonderful State, and in the greatest nation in history.

*Freedom: the idea we not only can take issue with our government, but that if we think something’s wrong, we indeed have the duty and obligation to speak out.

*Equality: the idea, as Mr. Jefferson said, we are all created equal."
