Justice Clarence Thomas to Deliver Oath of Office to Mike Pence
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Clarence Thomas will administer the Oath of Office to Vice President-elect Michael R. Pence during the Inauguration Ceremony on January 20, 2017. The Vice President-elect also will become the first officeholder, since President Ronald Reagan, to take the oath using The Reagan Family Bible.
Justice Clarence Thomas to Administer Oath of Office to Vice President-elect Pence “It will be my honor to take the Oath of Office to defend our Constitution from a man who has dedicated his life to the same noble pursuit,” said Vice President-elect Pence. “Justice Thomas was born into poverty in Pin Point, Georgia. From those humble beginnings, Justice Thomas went on to graduate from Holy Cross College and Yale Law School. He served in the Reagan Administration and was appointed to the federal bench in 1990 and the Supreme Court in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush. I have long admired Justice Clarence Thomas and deeply respect his judicial philosophy, dedication to the rule of law, and his historic service on the bench of our nation’s highest court.”
In October, 2016, Justice Thomas celebrated his 25th year on the Supreme Court, making him the longest serving African-American Justice in American history. On Friday, Justice Thomas will become the first African-American in history to administer the Oath of Office to the Vice President or President of the United States.
Vice President-elect Pence Becomes First, since Reagan, to Take Oath of Office with The Reagan Family Bible “President Ronald Reagan placed his faith in a loving God and the goodness of our country. He set out to change a nation and in doing so, he changed the world. In the march of history, Ronald Reagan’s time in office was limited, but his legacy inspired a generation and will continue beyond,” said Vice President-elect Pence. “It will be humbling to enter office with President Donald Trump, standing next to my family, with my wife Karen holding the same Bible used by President Reagan when he took office.”
The Reagan Family Bible that Vice President-elect Pence will place his right hand upon was used by Ronald Reagan for his gubernatorial and presidential inaugurations. This marks the first time a person other than Reagan has used it at an inauguration. The Reagan Family Bible has never been out of the possession of the Reagan family or the Reagan Foundation, and is currently on permanent display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California. Because it is such a priceless artifact and requires special protection, Andrew Littlefair, one of President Reagan’s top White House aides, and who now serves on the Board of Trustees for the Reagan Foundation and Institute, will hand carry the Bible from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., where it will be put under lock and key.
When Vice President-elect Pence takes the oath, The Reagan Family Bible will be open to the same passage used during President Reagan’s inaugurations, and Pence often referenced toward the end of his remarks during the 2016 campaign:
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14)
PIC Announces Special Inaugural Celebrations, Opens Ticketing to Public Events
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced two special inaugural celebrations, free and open to the public, which will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2017. These events will allow the American people to witness history and tickets are not required for admittance to events on the National Mall, including the celebrations and the public standing areas for the swearing-in. Free commemorative tickets for the celebrations are now available on our website at 58PIC2017.org.
The events on Thursday will be held at the Lincoln Memorial, one of our nation’s most sacred temples. For more than a century, Americans have gathered at the Memorial under the thoughtful gaze of our sixteenth president to have their voices ring loud and clear from coast to coast.
“President-elect Trump has made it clear that this inaugural is of, by, and for the American people. The 58th Inaugural will celebrate American history and heritage, while setting the course to a brighter and bolder future for all Americans,” said Chairman Tom Barrack. “Above all, it will serve as tribute to one of our greatest attributes, the peaceful transition of partisan power.”
“As Abraham Lincoln said, ‘when an election is over, it is altogether fitting a free people that until the next election they should be one people,’” continued Chairman Barrack. “We will be one people working together, leading together, and making America great again, together.”
Voices of the People will feature groups from the hundreds of applications received by the Presidential Inaugural Committee to take part in inaugural festivities. Those participating include the DC Fire Department Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, King’s Academy Honor Choir, the Republican Hindu Coalition, Montgomery Area High School Marching Band, Marlana Van Hoose, Maury NJROTC Color Guard, Pride of Madawaska, Webelos Troop 177, Northern Middle School Honors Choir, American Tap Company, South Park and District Pipe Band, Everett High School Viking Marching Band, TwirlTasTix Baton Twirling, and Celtic United Pipes and Drums.
The Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration will take place following Voices of the People and will be broadcast live to the nation from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It will feature historic remarks from President-elect Donald J. Trump and special appearances from Toby Keith, Jon Voight, Jennifer Holliday, The Piano Guys, Lee Greenwood, RaviDrums, 3 Doors Down, and The Frontmen of Country (featuring Tim Rushlow, former lead singer of “Little Texas”, Larry Stewart of “Restless Heart” and Richie McDonald of “Lonestar”). The Celebration will also feature the participation of military bands as we honor our Armed Forces across all inaugural events and a fireworks show by Grucci at the conclusion.
Information on how to attend public events can be found at 58PIC2017.org.
The Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration is produced and directed by Emmy Award winners and nominees. For the first time ever, this inaugural event will be a fully produced broadcast event freely available to all U.S. networks, and features the first planned remarks by the President-elect in Washington, D.C. The Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration will also be a pooled event.

Four Former Secretaries of Housing and Urban Development Endorse Dr. Ben Carson
(Washington, DC) – Today, nominee for United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson received the bipartisan endorsement of four former Secretaries of Housing and Urban Development. These former secretaries, who wrote a letter to Chairman of the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Mike Crapo and Ranking Member Sherrod Brown, cited Dr. Carson’s ability to learn and adapt in high pressure situations as reasons he will be an innovative and exceptional member of the President’s cabinet. “I am immensely grateful for the support of Secretaries Cisneros, Martinez, Jackson and Preston, and it is a great honor to be mentioned with such accomplished public servants,” said Dr. Carson. “If confirmed, I look forward to listening to the concerns of the American people in order to develop new solutions to age-old problems, especially increasing opportunity, and making America's neighborhoods stronger.”
Full text of the letter can be read below:
Dear Chairman Crapo and Ranking Member Brown:
We write today, from both sides of the political aisle, in support of Dr. Ben Carson’s nomination as Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, a position we have all held.
Some of us came in with deep housing experience while others had to learn it. We all succeeded thanks to the help of the cadre of dedicated civil servants -- a team of respected, career leaders who have stood alongside each one of us, helping us guide the agency to succeed in its mission.
The singular, common piece of advice every HUD secretary is given is to listen. It worked to help us overcome the challenges we faced, and we know Dr. Carson will heed it as well as he works to help make HUD’s mission a reality: creating strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all.
As secretary, we know that Dr. Carson will learn about what works, develop new innovations, measure outcomes, and achieve real results to improve communities throughout America.
We urge the Committee to support Dr. Carson’s confirmation.
Henry Cisneros (HUD Secretary, 1993-1997) Sen. Mel Martinez (HUD Secretary, 2001-2003) Alphonso Jackson (HUD Secretary, 2004-2008) Steven Preston (HUD Secretary, 2008-2009)
President-Elect Trump Announces Former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani to Lend Expertise to Cyber Security Efforts
(New York, NY) – President-elect Trump is very pleased to announce former Mayor Rudy Giuliani will be sharing his expertise and insight as a trusted friend concerning private sector cyber security problems and emerging solutions developing in the private sector. This is a rapidly evolving field both as to intrusions and solutions and it is critically important to get timely information from all sources.
In addition, from time to time because of the changing nature of this problem, it is contemplated that the President-elect will be hosting a series of meetings with senior corporate executives from companies which have faced or are facing challenges similar to those facing the government and public entities today, such as hacking, intrusions, disruptions, manipulations, theft of data and identities, and securing information technology infrastructure.
The President-elect’s intent is to obtain experiential and anecdotal information from each executive on challenges faced by his/her company, how the company met the challenges, approaches which were productive or successful, and those which were not. The attendees may or may not change from session to session, but the specific agenda subjects will likely change because of the rapidly evolving field of cyber security, and frequent developments, both positive and negative. No consensus advice or recommendations resulting from group deliberations or interaction is expected or will be solicited.
Cyber intrusion is the fastest growing crime in the United States and much of the world. Its impact is felt from the individual citizen whose identity is stolen to the large private and government entities that have seen their confidential information seriously compromised. It is also a major threat to our national security.
As the use of modern communications and technology has moved forward at unparalleled speed the necessary defenses have lagged behind. The President-elect recognizes that this needs immediate attention and input from private sector leaders to help the government plan to make us more secure.
Mr. Giuliani was asked to initiate this process because of his long and very successful government career in law enforcement and his now sixteen years of work providing security solutions in the private sector.
Mr. Giuliani is the chairman of the global cyber security practice at Greenberg Traurig and the Chairman and CEO of Giuliani Partners, an international security consulting firm.

Statement from Minnesota DFL Chairman on President Obama’s Farewell Address
“Tonight’s speech reminds us once again of how lucky we’ve been to have such a dedicated, even-tempered public servant leading our country for the past 8 years. The Obama Administration set out to build a country that gave every family an equal opportunity to succeed and throughout all his trials and tribulations, President Obama continued to prioritize his plan for a better future for America’s families over partisan bickering and political games.
“As we look back on President Obama’s two terms in office, we can definitively say that his presidency will go down as one of the most accomplished in our country’s recent history. In the face of extreme Republican opposition, President Obama not only brought us out of the Great Recession but has ensured steady economic growth ever since. He worked to make the unemployment rate less than half of where it peaked in the Great Recession, helped give people health care no matter their background, partnered with global leaders to protect our planet for generations to come, and successfully passed Wall Street reform.
“As we witness the beginning of a new administration that seeks to undo all the progress we’ve made over the past 8 years, we must continue to carry President Obama’s inspiring message of hope with us. That is the best way to honor the legacy of our 44th president.”
